Angelo Tsirekas
Angelo Tsirekas is an Australian politician who served as mayor of the City of Canada Bay in New South Wales from 2002 to 2016 and again from 2017 until he was sacked in 2023. Political career Tsirekas became mayor of Canada Bay in 2002, and was re-elected in 2004, 2008 and 2012. In 2016, he was announced as the Labor Party candidate for Reid at the federal election, and subsequently resigned as mayor. He was unsuccessful, finishing with a two-party-preferred vote of 45.31%. Tsirekas was returned as mayor at the 2017 election with 54.9% of the vote after preferences. On 19 October 2021, Tsirekas joined Our Local Community after not being re-endorsed by Labor for the December election. He was re-elected, this time with 57.5% of the vote after preferences. 2017 New South Wales Mayoral Elections
The 2017 New South Wales mayoral elections were held on 9 September 2017 to elect mayors or lord mayors to 13 of the 46 local government areas (LGAs) up for election in New South Wales. The elections were held as part of the statewide local elections. While most mayors in New South Wales are elected by councillors at meetings, several choose to have directly-elected (or popularly elected) mayors. This was the last time the position of mayor of North Sydney was directly-elected, as a referendum held on the same day as the local elections saw 52.4% of residents vote in favour of replacing the election with a vote from councillors. Legal career Hoenig was a practising barrister and public defender, who acted as the counsel assisting the inquiry into the death of Dianne Brimble, where he made recommendations that up to three of the persons assisting the inquiry could face prosecution. He defended David Dinh, who was accused of killing New South Wales MP John Newman. Dinh was acquitted by a jury. The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) is an agency of the Government of New South Wales responsible for eliminating and investigating corrupt activities and enhancing the integrity of the state's public administration. The Commission was established in 1989, pursuant to the , modeled after the ICAC in Hong Kong. It is led by a Chief Commissioner appointed for a fixed five-year term; and two part-time Commissioners. Then-NSW Premier Mike Baird suggested in November 2016 his desire to move from a sole Commissioner to a three-commissioner system, however this was strongly criticised by two former ICAC commissioners as weakening and politicising the organisation, leading to the resignation of then-Commissioner Megan Latham. The 2021 New South Wales mayoral elections were held on 4 December 2021 to elect mayors or lord mayors to 35 of the 128 local government areas (LGAs) in New South Wales. The 2016 Australian federal election was a double dissolution election held on Saturday 2 July to elect all 226 members of the 45th Parliament of Australia, after an extended eight-week official campaign period. It was the first double dissolution election since the 1987 election and the first under a new voting system for the Senate that replaced group voting tickets with optional preferential voting. Division Of Reid
The Division of Reid is an Australian electoral division in the state of New South Wales. History The division is named after Sir George Reid, a former Premier of New South Wales and the fourth Prime Minister of Australia. The division was proclaimed at the redistribution of 13 September 1922, and was first contested at the 1922 federal election. Under initial proposals for the 2009 redistribution, the Australian Electoral Commission proposed that the division be abolished. However, in the final proposal, the name "Reid" was retained for a division combining much of the now-abolished Division of Lowe with part of the old Division of Reid. Incidentally, the redistribution brought George Reid's old home, at Mount Royal, Strathfield, within the boundaries of the electorate that bears his name.
