Angela Voigt
Angela Voigt, née Schmalfeld (18 May 1951 – 11 April 2013) was an East German long jumper. Biography Voigt was born in Weferlingen, in what was then East Germany, on 18 May 1951. She was originally a pentathlete, and finished third and second at the East German championships in 1972 and 1973. Because of injuries she eventually concentrated on the long jump only. She finished fourth at the 1974 European Championships. Voigt set a long jump world record of 6.92 metres at Dresden on 9 May 1976 but it was broken ten days later by Siegrun Siegl. At the 1976 Montreal Olympics Siegl finished fourth while Voigt won the gold with a leap of 6.72 metres. Kathy McMillan, who eventually finished second, had a longer jump which was deemed a foul. Long Jump
The long jump is a track and field event in which athletes combine speed, strength and agility in an attempt to leap as far as possible from a takeoff point. Along with the triple jump, the two events that measure jumping for distance as a group are referred to as the "horizontal jumps". This event has a history in the ancient Olympic Games and has been a modern Olympic event for men since the first Olympics in 1896 and for women since 1948. Susen Tiedtke
Susen Tiedtke (born 23 January 1969 in East Berlin, East Germany) is a German former long jumper, who took part in two editions of the Summer Olympics and won a silver and a bronze medal at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics in 1993 and 1995 respectively. Tiedtke represented Germany in the long jump at the 1992 Olympic Games, where she finished 8th, and the 2000 Olympic Games, where she finished 5th. At the 1992 games, Tiedtke had originally finished ninth, but was promoted to eighth after the drugs disqualification of Nijole Medvedeva. This would also happen in 2000 when she was promoted from sixth to fifth after the drugs disqualification of Marion Jones. Birgit Großhennig
Birgit Großhennig (born 21 February 1965, in Blankenburg, Thuringia) is a retired East German athlete. She competed in the high jump at the European Junior Championships in 1981 and 1983, finishing fourth both times. She recorded her personal best, 1.88 metres, in 1981. She is better known for her achievements in the long jump, in which she achieved a career best of 7.00 metres in June 1984 in Berlin. This jump is the second longest by a junior athlete (under 20 years old) in history and places her fifth on the German all-time performers list, behind Heike Drechsler, Helga Radtke, Sabine Paetz and Brigitte Wujak. The Sabines (; lat, Sabini; it, Sabini, all exonyms) were an Italic people who lived in the central Apennine Mountains of the ancient Italian Peninsula, also inhabiting Latium north of the Anio before the founding of Rome. Heike Drechsler
Heike Gabriela Drechsler (; ; born 16 December 1964) is a German former track and field athlete who represented East Germany and later Germany. One of the most successful long jumpers of all-time, she is a former world record holder and ranks third on the all-time list with her legal best of 7.48 metres in 1988. Her marginally wind-assisted jump of 7.63 metres (+2.1) in 1992 at altitude in Sestriere, is still the furthest a woman has ever long jumped. She is the only woman who has won two Olympic gold medals in the long jump, winning in 1992 and 2000. Kathy McMillan
Catherine "Kathy" Laverne McMillan (born November 7, 1957) is a retired American athlete, who mainly competed in the long jump. McMillan was born in Raeford, North Carolina. She competed for the United States at the 1976 Summer Olympics held in Montreal, Canada, where she won the silver medal in the Women's Long Jump event as an 18-year-old. She attended Tennessee State University. While competing for Hoke County High School, in Raeford, North Carolina she set the still standing NFHS National High School Record in the Long Jump of while participating in the Jack in the Box Invitational at UCLA on June 12, 1976. McMillan qualified for the 1980 US Olympic team but was unable to compete due to the 1980 Summer Olympics boycott. Siegrun Siegl
Siegrun Siegl ( Thon, born 29 October 1954 in Apolda, Thuringia) is a retired East German athlete who specialised in the pentathlon and later long jump. Biography She finished fourth in pentathlon at the 1974 European Championships. On 19 May 1976 she broke the world record in long jump with 6.99 metres in Dresden, only 10 days after her fellow East German, Angela Voigt, had set a new record. She only finished fourth in this event at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, but won the gold medal in pentathlon. After this she concentrated on the long jump only. She won the 1979 European Indoor Championships and finished fifth at the 1980 Summer Olympics.
