Ang Yang-2 Ship Grounding
The An Yang 2 is a Chinese bulk carrier cargo ship built in 2010. In 2025, the ship ran aground off the coast of Sakhalin, Russia, on 8 February 2025, after it lifted anchor from a temporary near-coastal anchorage, but did so during a heavy storm. The Russian News Agency TASS said the ship was transporting coal, fuel oil, and motor oil and that no spill has been detected. As of 9 February, the ship was located approximately from the coastline, and neither divers nor rescue vessels have been able to approach the vessel due to the storm. A strong storm was reported to a factor in the vessel running aground. Although 20 crew were on board, the ship did not issue a distress signal. The governor of Sakhalin Valery Limarenkov placed the region on high alert. The grounding resulted in multiple ballast tanks holed, but still no oil leaks reported after two days. The Russian News Agency TASS, or simply TASS, is a Russian state-owned news agency founded in 1904. It is the largest Russian news agency and one of the largest news agencies worldwide. A containment boom is a temporary floating barrier used to contain an oil spill. Booms are used to reduce the possibility of polluting shorelines and other resources, and to help make recovery easier. Booms help to concentrate oil in thicker surface rather than disperse across larger areas. A shadow fleet, also referred to as a dark fleet, is a "ship or vessel that uses concealing tactics to smuggle sanctioned goods". Shadow fleets are a direct response to International sanctions, international or unilateral economic sanctions. The term therefore more broadly refers to practices of sanction-busting in the maritime domain through the use of unregistered or fraudulent vessels. Goods commonly exported and imported include raw materials such as oil and iron, luxury goods, weapons and defense technologies, etc. Shadow fleets use a wide range of techniques in a complex layer, aimed at obscuring their activities or keeping plausible deniability.
