Andy Strangeway
Andy Strangeway (born 1965 in Londesborough, East Riding of Yorkshire) is a decorator and adventurer from the Yorkshire Wolds. He has landed and slept on all 162 of Scotland's islands of 100 acres (40 hectares) and above. He completed this challenge on 29 August 2007 after landing on Soay, St. Kilda the day before. On Saturday 8 August 2009, upon landing Out Stack, Strangeway claimed to be the first person to land the four extreme points of Scotland. However, as he has not yet landed on Rockall, this claim is disputed. On 10 May 2010, Strangeway claimed to have successfully applied for the first ever planning permission for Rockall to replace the Queen's plaque. He intended to do this 2011 but abandoned the trip. However, Tom McClean had in fact applied successfully for consent for his temporary shelter in 1985. Londesborough
Londesborough is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately north of the market town of Market Weighton. The civil parish is formed by the village of Londesborough and the hamlet of Middlethorpe. According to the 2011 UK census, Londesborough parish had a population of 182, a reduction of one on the 2001 UK census figure. The Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail, a long distance footpath passes through the village. Some scholars suggest the still-undiscovered Roman camp of Delgovicia is in the vicinity of Londesborough. Londesborough Hall was a country house in the village but all that now remains is the park land that surrounded the house which is called Londesborough Park. East Riding Of Yorkshire
The East Riding of Yorkshire, or simply East Riding or East Yorkshire, is a ceremonial county and unitary authority area in the Yorkshire and the Humber region of England. It borders North Yorkshire to the north and west, South Yorkshire to the south-west, and Lincolnshire to the south. Yorkshire Wolds
The Yorkshire Wolds are low hills in the counties of the East Riding of Yorkshire and North Yorkshire in north-eastern England. The name also applies to the district in which the hills lie. On the western edge, the Wolds rise to an escarpment which then drops sharply to the Vale of York. The highest point on the escarpment is Bishop Wilton Wold (also known as Garrowby Hill), which is above sea level. To the north, on the other side of the Vale of Pickering, lie the North York Moors, and to the east the hills flatten into the plain of Holderness. The largest town in the Wolds is Driffield, with other places including Pocklington, Thixendale and Kilham, the original 'capital' of the Wolds. Out Stack
Out Stack or Ootsta is an island in Shetland, Scotland and the northernmost point of both Scotland and the British Isles. It lies northeast of Muckle Flugga and north of the island of Unst. It is one of the North Isles of the Shetland Islands and lies within the Hermaness National Nature Reserve. It is uninhabited and there is no landfall directly to the north. Description Out Stack is little more than a rocky outcrop, and is uninhabited. It has been described as "the full stop at the end of Britain". Rockall
Rockall () is an uninhabitable granite islet situated in the North Atlantic Ocean. The United Kingdom claims that Rockall lies within its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and is part of its territory, but this claim is not recognised by Ireland. It and the nearby skerries of Hasselwood Rock and Helen's Reef are the only emergent parts of the Rockall Plateau. The rock was formed by magmatism as part of the North Atlantic Igneous Province during the Paleogene. Rockall's approximate distances from the closest islands in each direction are as follows: It is west of Soay, Scotland; northwest of Tory Island, Ireland; and south of Iceland. Tom McClean
Tom McClean is a veteran of both the Parachute Regiment and the SAS and is a survival expert who lived on the island of Rockall from 26 May to 4 July 1985 to affirm Britain's claim to it; this is the third longest human occupancy of the island, surpassed in 1997 by a team from Greenpeace which spent 42 days on the island, and in 2014 by Nick Hancock who spent 45 days there. Early life Having been abandoned as a baby, McClean started life as an orphan at Bethany Home in Dublin, Ireland. He spent much of his teenage years working on a farm until he was bored and enlisted in the British Army. John Muir Trust
The John Muir Trust (JMT) is a Scottish charity, established in 1983 to conserve wild land and wild places for the benefit of all. The Trust runs an environmental award scheme, manages several estates, mainly in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland and campaigns for better protection of wild land.
