Andy Coles
Andrew Wallace Jardine Coles (born 1960) is an English former police officer and Conservative Party politician, known for his undercover police work in the 1990s and subsequent political career. Career Andy Coles joined the Metropolitan Police in 1982, serving until 2012. Between 1991 and 1995, Coles served as an undercover Metropolitan Police officer infiltrating animal rights groups. He used the cover name Andy Davey. Coles wrote a tradecraft manual of the Special Demonstration Squad which advised subsequent undercover officers on managing sexual relationships with those they were targeting and the use of dead children's names as cover identities. Coles was elected as a member of Peterborough City Council for the Conservative Party in 2015 and he was appointed to the Cabinet of Peterborough City Council to lead Children’s Services. ''The Guardian'' is a British daily newspaper. It was founded in Manchester in 1821 as ''The Manchester Guardian'' and changed its name in 1959, followed by a move to London. The 2024 Peterborough City Council election took place on 2 May 2024 to elect members of Peterborough City Council in Cambridgeshire, England. 23 of the 60 seats on the council were contested, including an early election in Werrington. The election took place alongside other local elections across England. Undercover Policing Inquiry
The Undercover Policing Inquiry is an independent statutory inquiry into undercover policing in England and Wales. It was announced by Theresa May, the then Home Secretary, on 6 March 2014, and its terms of reference were published on 16 July 2015. The Inquiry has been chaired by Sir John Mitting since July 2017, following the resignation due to ill-health of Sir Christopher Pitchford. Background Theresa May commissioned the Undercover Policing Inquiry in 2015, in response to a string of allegations about the activities of undercover units, including the disclosure that police had spied on campaigners fighting for justice for Stephen Lawrence. UK Undercover Policing Relationships Scandal
Around the end of 2010 and during 2011, it was disclosed in UK media that a number of undercover police officers had, as part of their 'false persona', entered into intimate relationships with members of targeted groups and in some cases proposed marriage or fathered children with protesters who were unaware their partner was a police officer in a role as part of their official duties. Various legal actions followed, including eight women who took action against the Metropolitan Police and the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), stating they were deceived into long-term intimate relationships by five officers, including Mark Kennedy, the first officer to be identified as such, who was publicly identified on 21 October 2010 as infiltrating social and environmental justice campaigns, and Mark Kennedy himself who claimed in turn that he had been incompetently handled by his superiors and denied psychological counselling.
