He has been a member of the Senate since 7 June 2011, President of the Benelux Parliament since 1 January 2017, and in 2018 Labour Party leader in the Senate. The Labour Party ( , PvdA or P van de A ) is a social democratic political party in the Netherlands. The party was founded in 1946 as a merger of the Social Democratic Workers' Party, the Free-thinking Democratic League and the Christian Democratic Union. Prime Ministers from the Labour Party have been Willem Drees (1948–1958), Joop den Uyl (1973–1977) and Wim Kok (1994–2002). From 2012 to 2017, the PvdA formed the second-largest party in parliament and was the secondary partner in the Second Rutte cabinet with the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy. The Senate ( , literally "First Chamber of the States General", or simply ; sometimes ) is the upper house of the States General of the Netherlands, States General, the legislature of the Netherlands. Its 75 members are elected on lists by the members of the twelve States-Provincial and four electoral colleges for the Senate every four years, within three months of the provincial elections. Esther-Mirjam Sent (born 9 March 1967) is a Dutch economist, academic researcher, university professor, and politician. She has been the chairwoman of the Labour Party (Netherlands), Labour Party since 2021. Before that, she was a member of the Senate (Netherlands), Senate from 7 June 2011 to 7 October 2021. Biography Sent attended the Rhedens Lyceum in Rozendaal from 1979 to 1985 and studied economics at the University of Amsterdam from 1985 to 1989; she graduated with honors. In 1994 she obtained her PhD in economics from Stanford University in California under the supervision of Nobel Prize winner Kenneth Arrow. Sent is professor of Economic Theory and Economic Policy at Radboud University Nijmegen and lives there. Its main role is laying down the guidelines for the policy of the municipal executive and exercising control over its execution by the mayor and aldermen.
