Andrey Simonov (general)
Andrei Dmitrievich Simonov (russian: Андрей Дмитриевич Симонов; born 29 June 1966) is a Russian Armed Forces major general (one-star rank) serving as Chief of the Electronic Warfare Troops of the 2nd Army of the Western Military District. On 30 April 2022, the Armed Forces of Ukraine claimed to have killed Simonov in an artillery strike. His death has yet to been confirmed by Russian officials. Biography Andrei Dmitrievich Simonov was born on 29 June 1966, in Baranovka, Verkhnekamsky District, Kirov Oblast. In 1987, he graduated from the Tomsk Higher Military Command School of Communications and began his service in the Electronic Warfare troops. The Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (russian: Военная академия Генерального штаба Вооруженных Сил Российской Федерации) is the senior staff college of the Russian Armed Forces. The academy is located in Moscow, on 14 Kholzunova Lane. It was founded in 1936 as a Soviet institution, based on higher command courses that had been established at the M. V. Frunze Military Academy, itself founded in 1918. An earlier General Staff Academy had existed during the Imperial period, since 1832. Students were, and probably still are, admitted to the Academy in the ranks of lieutenant colonel, colonel, and General-Major (one star). Most were colonels or newly promoted generals. List Of Russian Generals Killed During The Russian Invasion Of Ukraine
A number of Russian general officers have been killed during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. As of 28 November 2023, Ukrainian sources claimed that 16 Russian generals and 1 admiral had been killed during the invasion, while Russian sources have confirmed 7 deaths. Although seven of the Ukrainian claims were rebutted, the loss of even two general officers is rare. The scale of these losses is unprecedented since the Second Chechen War, in which Russia lost ten generals. This has been attributed to Russian senior commanders going to the field to address "difficulties in command and control" and "faltering Russian performance on the front line", insecure communication by Russian forces, and United States military intelligence that allowed the Ukrainians to target Russian officers. The Battle of Donbas is an ongoing military offensive that is part of the wider eastern Ukraine offensive of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
