Andrey Nelidov
Andrey Vitalyevich Nelidov () is the former Head of the Republic of Karelia in Russia. He came into power after Sergey Katanandov left office in 2010 for personal reasons, but resigned in 2012. Biography Andrei Nelidov is an industrial engineer. His career began in 1996 as vice-governor of Leningrad Oblast and Chairman of the Committee on Forestry. For a while, he was president of the White Sea-Omega Shipping Company. In 2001, he returned as a member of the Parliament of the Leningrad Oblast. In the summer of 2003, Nelidov supported the ex-governor of the region Vadim Gustov, heading his reelection campaign headquarters, for which Nelidov was expelled from the United Russia by the General Council of this party. In 2004, Nelidov was Vice-Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Leningrad Oblast, returning to the United Russia the next year. Karelians
Karelians (; ; ; ) are a Baltic Finnic ethnic group who are indigenous to the historical region of Karelia, which is today split between Finland and Russia. Karelians living in Russian Karelia are considered a distinct ethnic group closely related to Finnish Karelians, who are considered a subset of Finns. This distinction historically arose from Karelia having been fought over and eventually split between Sweden and Novgorod, resulting in Karelians being under different cultural spheres. In Russia, Karelians mostly live in the Republic of Karelia, where they are the designated ethnic group, and in other adjacent north-western parts of the country. Kizhi Island
Kizhi (, ; ) is an island near the geometrical center of Lake Onega in the Republic of Karelia ( Medvezhyegorsky District), Russia. It is elongated from north to south and is about long, wide and is about away from the capital of Karelia, Petrozavodsk. Settlements and churches on the island were known from at least the 15th century. The population was rural, but was forced by the government to assist development of the ore mining and iron plants in the area that resulted in a major Kizhi Uprising in 1769–1771. Most villages had disappeared from the island by the 1950s and now only a small rural settlement remains. In the 18th century, two major churches and a bell tower were built on the island, which are now known as Kizhi Pogost. In the 1950s, dozens of historical wooden buildings were moved to the island from various parts of Karelia for preservation purposes. Vadim Gustov
Vadim Gustov (; born 26 December 1948) is a Russian politician who served as first deputy prime minister of Russia from 1998 to 1999 and a regional leader. Early life and education Gustov was born in Kalinino, Alexandrovsky District, Vladimir Oblast in 1948. He was educated in Sweden. Career Gustov was the head of the Leningrad Oblast Council of People's Deputies until it was dissolved in October 1993. In 1994, he served as chairman of the Federation Council's Commonwealth of Independent States affairs committee. He was elected as the governor of Leningrad Oblast in September 1996, taking 53% of the votes. He was independent, but was supported by the Communist Party of the Russian Federation. He replaced Alexander Belyakov in the aforementioned post. Gustov served as governor until his appointment as first deputy prime minister on 18 September 1998.
