The National Portrait Gallery, also known as the National Portrait Gallery of Australia (NGA or NPGA) in Canberra is a public art gallery containing portraits of prominent Australians. It was established in 1998 and moved to its present building on King Edward Terrace in December 2008. History In the early 1900s, the painter Tom Roberts was the first to propose that Australia should have a national portrait gallery, but it was not until the 1990s that the possibility began to take shape. The 1992 exhibition ''Uncommon Australians'' – developed by the gallery's founding patrons, Gordon and Marilyn Darling – was shown in Canberra and toured to four state galleries, igniting the idea of a national portrait gallery. Elizabeth Cameron Dalman
Elizabeth Cameron Dalman (nee Wilson; born 1934) is an Australian choreographer, teacher, and performer. She founded Australian Dance Theatre and was its artistic director from 1965 to 1975. She is also the founding director of Mirramu Dance Company. Early life and education Elizabeth Wilson was born in 1934 in the Adelaide eastern suburb of Tusmore. Her father, Sir Keith Cameron Wilson, was a lawyer and politician and her mother, Elizabeth Hornabrook (nee Bonython), was an art lover. Dalman began dancing when she was three years old and studied dance during her school years. The Order of Australia is an Australian honours and awards system, Australian honour that recognises Australian citizens and other persons for outstanding achievement and service. Bendigo Art Gallery is an Australian art gallery located in Bendigo, Victoria. It is one of the oldest and largest regional art galleries. History The gallery was founded in 1887. The gallery's collection was first housed in the former Bendigo Volunteer Rifle's room, converted into an exhibition space by Bendigo architect William Charles Vahland (1828–1915) in 1890 and renamed Bolton Court. Angus Trumble
Angus Alexander Geoffrey Trumble (6 October 1964 – 8 October 2022) was an Australian scholar, art curator, and author. He was the director of the National Portrait Gallery of Australia, a senior research fellow at the National Museum of Australia, a curator at the Yale Center for British Art at Yale University, and at the Art Gallery of South Australia. His books include ''A Brief History of the Smile'' and ''The Finger: A Handbook''. Early life Trumble was born in Melbourne on 6 October 1964. He was the youngest of four sons of Peter Campbell Trumble, a lawyer, and Helen Trumble. Cantilever
A cantilever is a rigid structural element that extends horizontally and is unsupported at one end. Typically it extends from a flat vertical surface such as a wall, to which it must be firmly attached. Like other structural elements, a cantilever can be formed as a beam, plate, truss, or slab. Walter Burley Griffin (November 24, 1876February 11, 1937) was an American architect and landscape architect.
