Major Andrew Hunter Holmes (1782August 14, 1814) born in Fairfax County, Virginia, was an American army officer. He was Captain of the 24th Infantry in the War of 1812 and was promoted to major June 8, 1813. On April 18, 1814, he was Major of the 32nd Infantry. He was victorious at the Battle of Longwoods in Upper Canada but was killed August 4, 1814, in an attack on Fort Mackinac, Michigan, in the Battle of Mackinac Island. Maywand District Murders
The Maywand District murders were the thrill killings of at least three Afghan civilians perpetrated by a group of U.S. Army soldiers from January to May 2010, during the War in Afghanistan. The soldiers, who referred to themselves as the "Kill Team", were members of the 3rd Platoon, Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, and 5th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division. They were based at FOB Ramrod in Maiwand, in Kandahar Province of Afghanistan. During the summer of 2010, the military charged five members of the platoon with the murders of three Afghan civilians in Kandahar Province and collecting their body parts as trophies. Andrew V. Holmes (born 1959 or 1960) is a community activist active in the Chicago metropolitan area. He is especially known for his activism related to combatting gun violence, and is also active in advocacy for senior citizens and the homeless. Since 2019, Holmes has served as a village trustee ( city councilman) in the Chicago suburb of Dolton, Illinois. Holmes unsuccessfully ran for mayor of Dolton in 2021, losing to Tiffany Henyard. He aligned himself politically with Henyard during her controversial mayoralty. Early life Holmes grew up both in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago, as well as in Montgomery, Alabama. Andrew Fernando Holmes (March 17, 1797 – October 9, 1860) was a Canadian physician, academic, and one of the founders of the Montreal Medical Institution, the first medical school in Canada. In 1797, Holmes' parents, Thomas Holmes and Susanna Scott, and his older brother, Benjamin were emigrating to North America when they were captured by a French frigate. They were taken to Cádiz, Spain, where Holmes was born. The family eventually reached British North America in 1801, settling in Montreal. Holmes apprenticed to Daniel Arnoldi, a leading Montreal physician, and was qualified to practise medicine. He then went to Scotland, where he received a diploma from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1818 and a Doctor of Medicine degree from University of Edinburgh in 1819. Andrew Bruce Holmes (born 5 September 1943) is an Australian and British senior research chemist and professor at the Bio21 Institute, Melbourne, Australia, and the past President of the Australian Academy of Science. His research interests lie in the synthesis of biologically-active natural products (spanning therapeutic materials to new biotechnological probes) and optoelectronic polymers (with applications to electroluminescent flexible displays and organic solar cells). Andrew John Holmes (born 7 January 1969) is an English former footballer who played in the Football League for Doncaster Rovers and Stoke City. Career Holmes was born in Stoke-on-Trent and played non-league football with Parkway Clayton before joining Stoke City in 1985. He spent two seasons in the reserves and made his professional debut against Shrewsbury Town in 1987–88. He made just two more appearances that season and failed to make one in 1988–89 before he was given his chance in December 1989 due to injuries. He played in nine matches at centre back in 1989–90 but his inexperience lead to him being dropped for Noel Blake and due to Stoke's relegation he left for Fourth Division Doncaster Rovers.
