Andrew Hero Jr.
Andrew Hero Jr. (December 13, 1868 – February 7, 1942) was a Major general (United States), major general in the United States Army who was prominent for his service as Chief of United States Army Coast Artillery Corps, Coast Artillery. Early life Andrew Hero Jr. was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on December 13, 1868. His father, Andrew Hero, was a soldier in the Confederate States Army, and served in the 141st Field Artillery Regiment, Washington Artillery. The younger Andrew Hero was educated in New Orleans and attended Tulane University and the Columbia School of Engineering and Applied Science, School of Mines at Columbia University before becoming a student at the United States Military Academy. The U.S. Army Coast Artillery Corps (CAC) was an administrative corps responsible for coastal, harbor, and anti-aircraft defense of the United States and its possessions between 1901 and 1950. Fort Yates, North Dakota
Fort Yates is a city in Sioux County, North Dakota, United States. It is the tribal headquarters of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and county seat of Sioux County. Since 1970 the population has declined markedly from more than 1,100 residents, as people have left for other locations for work. The population was 176 at the 2020 census. History A primarily Native American settlement developed here after a US Army post at this site was established in 1863 as the Standing Rock Cantonment, intended for the US Army garrison to oversee the Hunkpapa and Blackfeet bands, and the Inhunktonwan and Cuthead of the Upper Yanktonai, of the Lakota Oyate.
