Andrea Zorzi
Andrea Zorzi (born 29 July 1965) is an Italian former volleyball player, won two World Championships with the Italy men's national volleyball team (1990 and 1994). A 201 cm athlete, Zorzi was an effective spiker who played as an opposite hitter. He was popularly known as "Zorro". In 1991, he was declared World's Best Player by the FIVB. In 2024, Zorzi was inducted into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame. National team Zorzi was the 1990 FIVB World League MVP after helping Italy win the gold medal, and was at one point reputedly the world's highest paid volleyball player. He was instrumental in Italy winning the gold medal at the 1990 Goodwill Games in Seattle. Zorzi won gold medals with the Italian team at the 1990 FIVB World Championship in Brazil and the 1994 FIVB World Championship in Greece. Noale
Noale is a town in the Metropolitan City of Venice, Veneto, Italy. It is part of the Miranese district, together with the neighboring municipalities of Mirano, Santa Maria di Sala, Salzano, Scorzè, Spinea and Martellago. Palio The Palio di Noale is the annual historical re-enactment of a medieval contest which was held under the seigniory of the Tempesta family. Historical documents show that the Palio was first celebrated in 1339, in occasion of Pentecost. It was originally intended to commemorate Noale's annexation to Treviso's possessions. FIVB Volleyball World League
The FIVB Volleyball World League was an annual international men's volleyball competition. Created in 1990, it was the longest and richest of all the international events organized by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB). The women's version of the competition was called FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix. This event should not be confused with the other international volleyball competitions, the World Championship, the World Cup and the World Grand Champions Cup. Italy Men's National Volleyball Team
The Italy men's national volleyball team represents the country in international competitions and friendly matches. The national team is controlled by the Italian Volleyball Federation, the governing body for Volleyball in Italy. It is one of the most successful national teams in the history of volleyball, having won four World Championships ( 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2022), seven European Championships, one World Cup (1995) and eight World League (1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2000). The Men's European Volleyball Championship (''EuroVolley'') is the official competition for senior men's national volleyball teams of Europe, organized by the European Volleyball Confederation ( CEV). The initial gap between championships was variable, but since 1975 they have been awarded every two years. The current champion is Poland, which won its second title at the 2023 tournament. History The first tournament was held in 1948 with participation of six national teams. Being only participant from Eastern Europe, Czechoslovakia captured gold. The teams from Eastern Europe dominated at the tournament for next four decades. Goodwill Games
The Goodwill Games were an international sports competition created by Ted Turner in reaction to the political troubles surrounding the Olympic Games of the 1980s. In 1979, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan caused the United States and other Western countries to boycott the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, an act reciprocated when the Soviet Union and other Eastern Bloc countries (with the exception of Romania) boycotted the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The idea came to Turner in 1984 during his visit to Moscow. He was disappointed with the boycott, evaluating it as a negative outcome for both sides in the conflict. The magnate also believed that it was an opportune moment to create alternative high-level competitions that could “steal” some of the success from the Olympics.
