Andre Smith (Nebraska Basketball)
Andre Smith is an American former basketball player. He is best known for his collegiate career at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in the late 1970s and early 1980s. A native of Chicago, Illinois, Smith played an undersized center at 6'7". Between 1977–78 and 1980–81, Smith scored 1,717 points in 114 games for a career average of 15.1 points per game. At the time of his graduation, he was second on the all-time Cornhuskers scoring list. Smith is still found in the top 10 on many other school records. During his junior and senior years he was named a First Team All- Big 8 Conference member, and at the conclusion of his final season was named the Big 8 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year. In 1980–81, Smith averaged 18.3 points per game to lead the conference en route to becoming Nebraska's first-ever player of the year recipient. Center (basketball)
The center (C), or the centre, also known as the five or the pivot, is one of the five positions in a regulation basketball game. The center is normally the tallest player on the team, and often has a great deal of strength and body mass as well. In the NBA, the center is typically close to tall. They traditionally play close to the basket in the low post. Centers are valued for their ability to protect their own goal from high-percentage close attempts on defense, while scoring and rebounding with high efficiency on offense. In the 1950s and 1960s, George Mikan and Bill Russell were centerpieces of championship dynasties and defined early prototypical centers. Big 8 Conference
The Big Eight Conference was a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)-affiliated Division I-A college athletic association that sponsored football. It was formed in January 1907 as the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MVIAA) by its charter member schools: the University of Kansas, University of Missouri, University of Nebraska, and Washington University in St. Louis. Additionally, the University of Iowa was an original member of the MVIAA, while maintaining joint membership in the Western Conference (now the Big Ten Conference). 1981 NBA Draft
The 1981 NBA draft was the 35th annual draft of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The draft was held on June 9, 1981, before the 1981–82 season. The draft was broadcast in the United States on the USA Network. In this draft, 23 NBA teams took turns selecting amateur U.S. college basketball players and other eligible players, including international players. The first two picks in the draft belonged to the teams that finished last in each conference, with the order determined by a coin flip. The Dallas Mavericks won the coin flip and were awarded the first overall pick, while the Detroit Pistons were awarded the second pick. The remaining first-round picks and the subsequent rounds were assigned to teams in reverse order of their win–loss record in the previous season. Big 8 Conference Men's Basketball Player Of The Year
The Big Eight Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year was an annual basketball award given to the Big Eight Conference's most outstanding player. The award was first given following the 1956–57 season and concluded after the 1995–96 season (the Big Eight disbanded and was re-formed into the present day Big 12 Conference). From 1960 through 1967 no award was given out. Wayman Tisdale of Oklahoma and Danny Manning of Kansas are the only players to have received the award three times.
