Andor Toth Jr.
Andor Toth, Jr. (1948–2002) was an American cellist in the Central European, Berlin, and Hungarian traditions. Toth Jr. was the son of the violinist Andor Toth, with whom he collaborated in the Toth Duo and the New Hungarian Quartet. His teachers were Gábor Rejtő and George Neikrug. He studied cello with Neikrug at the University of Texas before leaving for an appointment as solo cellist with the San Francisco Symphony under conductor Josef Krips. When he died of esophageal cancer on September 24, 2002, he was Professor of Cello at the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio, where he had taught for 30 years. Career In 1972, when Toth Jr. joined the Oberlin faculty, his father, who was also on the faculty, formed the New Hungarian Quartet. Zoltán Kodály
Zoltán Kodály (, ; , ; 16 December 1882 – 6 March 1967) was a Hungarian composer, ethnomusicologist, music pedagogue, linguist, and philosopher. He is well known internationally as the creator of the Kodály method of music education. Life Born in Kecskemét, Kingdom of Hungary, Kodály learned to play the violin as a child. In 1900, he entered the Department of Languages at the University of Budapest and at the same time Hans von Kössler's composition class at the Royal Hungarian Academy of Music. After completing his studies, he studied in Paris with Charles-Marie Widor for a year. In 1905 he visited remote villages to collect songs, recording them on phonograph cylinders. In 1906 he wrote a thesis on Hungarian folk song, "Strophic Construction in Hungarian Folksong". At around this time Kodály met fellow composer and compatriot Béla Bartók, whom he took under his wing and introduced to some of the methods involved in folk song collecting. The two became life ... String Quartet (Ravel)
Maurice Ravel completed his String Quartet in F major in early April 1903 at the age of 28. It was premiered in Paris in March the following year. The work follows a four-movement classical structure: the opening movement, in sonata form, presents two themes that occur again later in the work; a playful scherzo second movement is followed by a lyrical slow movement. The finale reintroduces themes from the earlier movements and ends the work vigorously. The quartet's structure is modelled on that of Claude Debussy's String Quartet, written in 1893, although Ravel's musical ideas strongly contrast with Debussy's. Debussy admired Ravel's piece rather more than did its dedicatee, Ravel's teacher Gabriel Fauré. String Quartet (Debussy)
Claude Debussy completed his String Quartet in G minor, Op. 10 ( L.91), in 1893 when he was 31 years old. It is Debussy's only string quartet. Background In 1892, Debussy had just abandoned the opera '' Rodrigue et Chimène''. He planned to write two string quartets, only one of which he completed. The quartet was meant to be dedicated to composer Ernest Chausson, but Chausson's personal reservations diverted this intention. The quartet received its premiere on December 29, 1893 by the Ysaÿe Quartet at the Société Nationale in Paris to mixed reactions. Analysis The work consists of four movements: Its sensuality and impressionistic tonal shifts are emblematic of its time and place and its cyclic structure constitutes a divorce from the rules of classical harmony into a new style.
