Anderson Z
The Anderson Z is an early 1930s American-designed single-engine biplane. Development The Model Z was designed and built by a self-taught "Flying Farmer", Andrew A. Anderson of Hawley, Minnesota and Rollag, Minnesota. It is of typical biplane layout, with the upper wing supported by cabane struts from the forward fuselage, and these also house the air-cooled radiator. The tailplane is high-set on the rear fuselage and the two seats are housed in separate open cockpits. The undercarriage is fixed and unsprung. The powerplant is a Curtiss OX-5 of . Operational history The aircraft was flown by Anderson during the early 1930s, but was retired before World War II. It was discovered in a dismantled state in 1977 and was acquired by the Antique Airplane Association (AAA) who restored it for display. Biplane
A biplane is a fixed-wing aircraft with two main wings stacked one above the other. The first powered, controlled aeroplane to fly, the Wright Flyer, used a biplane wing arrangement, as did many aircraft in the early years of aviation. While a biplane wing structure has a structural advantage over a monoplane, it produces more drag than a monoplane wing. Improved structural techniques, better materials and higher speeds made the biplane configuration obsolete for most purposes by the late 1930s. Hawley, Minnesota
Hawley is a town in Clay County, Minnesota, United States, along the Buffalo River. The population was 2,219 at the 2020 census. History The town went through six quick name changes after 1871 until, in 1872, it was finally named after Thomas Hawley Canfield, an officer in the Northern Pacific Railway, which laid out the town. General George Custer visited the town in 1876. The incident was recalled in WCCO Television's short film ''Incident at Hawley'', which aired during America's bicentennial year of 1976. Hawley was at one time settled by a colony of immigrants from Yeovil, Somerset; among these was Elisabeth Chant, later a painter in Minneapolis. Cabane Struts
In aeronautics, bracing comprises additional structural members which stiffen the functional airframe to give it rigidity and strength under load. Bracing may be applied both internally and externally, and may take the form of struts, which act in compression or tension as the need arises, and/or wires, which act only in tension. In general, bracing allows a stronger, lighter structure than one which is unbraced, but external bracing in particular adds drag which slows down the aircraft and raises considerably more design issues than internal bracing. Another disadvantage of bracing wires is that they require routine checking and adjustment, or rigging, even when located internally. Curtiss OX-5
The Curtiss OX-5 was an early V-8 American liquid-cooled aircraft engine built by Curtiss. It was the first American-designed aircraft engine to enter mass production, although it was considered obsolete when it did so in 1917.Smith, 1981, page 46 It nevertheless found widespread use on a number of aircraft, perhaps the most famous being the JN-4 "Jenny". Some 12,600 units were built through early 1919. The wide availability of the engine in the surplus market made it common until the 1930s, although it was considered unreliable for most of its service life. Design and development The OX-5 was the last in a series of Glenn Curtiss designed V engines, which started as a series of air-cooled V-twins for motorcycles in 1902. Antique Airplane Association
The Antique Airplane Association, Inc. (AAA) is the oldest antique airplane association in the world. The AAA formed in August 1953 by Robert L. Taylor, via a classified ad in Flying magazine and a few people with a deep-seated interest in old airplanes, for the purpose to fly, to preserve, to share and to promote the early flying machines. The AAA operates from Antique Airfield in Blakesburg, Iowa and serves as the headquarters for its 50 chapter organizations and 7000 members from throughout the United States and 20 foreign countries.
