Ancistrinae
Ancistrini is a tribe of catfishes of the family Loricariidae. Most are restricted to tropical and subtropical South America, but there are also several genus (''Ancistrus'', ''Chaetostoma'', '' Hemiancistrus'' and '' Lasiancistrus'') in southern Central America. Taxonomy Ancistrini have previously been considered a loricariid subfamily. However, the subfamily Hypostominae would be paraphyletic if Ancistrinae continued to be recognized. To continue recognizing the monophyly of this group while returning it to Hypostominae, Hypostominae was broken into several tribes. Pterygoplichthyini is sister to the tribe Ancistrini, which shares the derived presence of an evertible patch of plates on the cheek. Description Most Ancistrini species (except for some '' Pseudancistrus'' and '' Spectracanthicus'') can be separated from all other loricariids except the Pterygoplichthyini by the presence of evertible cheek plates with hypertrophied odontode Odontodes, or dermal teeth, are hard st ... Hypancistrus
''Hypancistrus'' is a genus of loricariid catfish originating from the Amazon basin in South America. Unlike many of the other Loricariids, however, some ''Hypancistrus'' species are more carnivorous and enjoy meat in their diet. ''Hypancistrus'' species are popular aquarium fish, including such popular fish as the zebra pleco and Queen Arabesque pleco. Etymology The name ''Hypancistrus'' is derived from the Greek ''"hypo"'' meaning under and ''"agkistron"'' meaning hook. Taxonomy This genus is a relatively recent one, described in 1991 with its type species ''H. zebra''. ''H. inspector'' was the next species to be described in 2002. In 2007, four new species of ''Hypancistrus'' were described. However, there are still many more undescribed species. These undescribed species are often designated with L-numbers. It was believed that this genus isn't monophyletic, though this has since changed. Species There are currently 8 recognized species in this genus: * '' Hypancistrus con ... Pseudolithoxus
''Pseudolithoxus'' is a genus of suckermouth armored catfishes with five described species from the basins of the Orinoco, Casiquiare and upper Rio Negro in Venezuela. Additionally, a possibly undescribed species is known from the Trombetas and Nhamundá rivers in Brazil. Taxonomy The species group was originally described in 2000 and the four species were temporarily placed in '' Lasiancistrus''. In 2001, the genus ''Pseudolithoxus'' was erected for these species. This group forms a monophyletic sister group to ''Lasiancistrus'' and '' Ancistrus''. ''P. anthrax'' and ''P. nicoi'' likely represent sister species. In 2011, ''P. kelsorum'' was described based on type material from Venezuela. Species There are currently five recognized species in this genus: * ''Pseudolithoxus anthrax'' ( Armbruster & Provenzano, 2000) * ''Pseudolithoxus dumus'' ( Armbruster & Provenzano, 2000) * ''Pseudolithoxus kelsorum'' Lujan & Birindelli, 2011 * ''Pseudolithoxus nicoi'' ( Armbruster & ... Pseudoqolus
''Pseudoqolus koko'' is a species of catfish in the family Loricariidae and the only species in the genus ''Pseudoqolus''. It is a freshwater fish native to South America, where it occurs in the Maroni basin. It is usually found on or near stony substrates in the main river channel at a depth of around 2 m (6.6 ft). The species has been collected alongside multiple other loricariid species, including ''Hemiancistrus medians'', ''Peckoltia otali'', ''Pseudancistrus barbatus'', ''Harttia guianensis'', ''Loricaria cataphracta'', and ''Rineloricaria stewarti''. It is noted that the gut contents of one specimen of this species contained primarily spicules and sponge fragments, indicating that it may feed on freshwater sponges. The species reaches 9 cm (3.5 inches) SL. ''Pseudoqolus koko'' was originally described as a member of the genus ''Panaqolus'' (a genus which is sometimes thought to be a subgenus of ''Panaque'') in 2012, although it was reclassified as a member of the mo ... Pseudancistrus
''Pseudancistrus'' is a genus of suckermouth armored catfishes native to South America. Taxonomy ''Pseudancistrus'' is a genus in the tribe Ancistrini of the subfamily Hypostominae. It was described by Pieter Bleeker in 1862, and redescribed by Jonathan Armbruster in 2004. Currently, there are 18 recognized species distributed in northern South America, with the inclusion of the genera ''Lithoxancistrus'', the species formerly known as ''Hemiancistrus megacephalus'', as well as the recently described ''Pseudancistrus corantijniensis''. There is no single morphological feature which distinguishes the group from related genera. Despite this, ''Pseudancistrus'' is generally recognized as a monophyletic group. Within the genus there is what is called the ''P. barbatus'' group. This group comprises Guyanese derived ''Pseudancistrus'' bearing hypertrophied odontodes along the snout and nonevertible cheek plates. It includes the five species ''P. barbatus'', ''P. corantijniensis'', ''P ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Peckoltia
''Peckoltia'' is a genus of small South American armored suckermouth catfishes. Many of these fish are popular aquarium fish. Taxonomy ''Peckoltia'' is a basal genus within the tribe Ancistrini of the subfamily Hypostominae. This genus is paraphyletic. At this point, many undescribed species remain. Many of the possibly undescribed species have an identification through the L-number system. ''Peckoltia'' species can be distinguished from most other in the genera in the tribe Ancistrini by having a lateral ridge on the opercle that usually has no odontodes and the teeth on their upper jaw ( dentary) forming an angle under 90 degrees; while some genera also have an angled dentary, ''Peckoltia'' species lack synapomorphies of these genera. This genus and the closely related ''Hemiancistrus'' may be synonymous, as neither genus is supported by synapomorphies. Generally, ''Peckoltia'' are considered to be those that have dorsal saddles and bands in the fins, while ''Heminancistr ... Parancistrus
''Parancistrus'' is a small genus of suckermouth armored catfishes native to South America. Taxonomy Three species - ''Hypostomus aurantiacus'', ''H. nigricans'' and ''H. vicinus'' - were described by François Louis de la Porte, comte de Castelnau in 1855. ''Parancistrus'' was described by Pieter Bleeker in 1862 and ''P. aurantiacus'' designated as type. Later, ''P. nigricans'' and ''P. vicinus'' were deemed to be synonyms of ''P. aurantiacus'', making ''P. aurantiacus'' the only species of ''Parancistrus'' until ''P. nudiventris'' was described in 2005. Species There are currently two recognized species in this genus: * ''Parancistrus aurantiacus'' ( Castelnau, 1855) * ''Parancistrus nudiventris'' Rapp Py-Daniel & Zuanon, 2005 Appearance and anatomy ''Parancistrus'' is unique among loricariids due to the presence of fleshy folds on the naked area around the dorsal fin and at the pectoral fin points insertion in the breeding males. Panaque
The genus ''Panaque'' contains a small number of small to medium-sized South American suckermouth armoured catfishes that are notable for being among the very few vertebrates that feed extensively on wood. In addition, algae and aufwuchs are an important part of the diet, and they use their rasping teeth to scrape this from rocks. These fish are also popular aquarium fish, where the sound of scraping as these fish forage for food is easily audible. Taxonomy '' Scobinancistrus'' and ''Panaqolus'' are sometimes considered to be subgenera of this genus. Species There are currently seven recognized species in this genus: * ''Panaque armbrusteri'' * ''Panaque bathyphilus'' * ''Panaque cochliodon'' * '' Panaque nigrolineatus'' (Royal panaque) * ''Panaque schaeferi'' * '' Panaque suttonorum'' (Blue-eye panaque) * ''Panaque titan'' Etymology The name ''Panaque'' is a Latinisation of a native Venezuelan name for these fish.
