Anarchism in Sweden first grew out of the nascent social democratic movement during the later 19th century, with a specifically libertarian socialist tendency emerging from a split in the movement. As with the movements in Germany and the Netherlands, Swedish anarchism had a strong syndicalist tendency, which culminated in the establishment of the Central Organisation of the Workers of Sweden (SAC) following an aborted general strike. The modern movement emerged during the late 20th century, growing within a number of countercultural movements before the revival of anarcho-syndicalism during the 1990s. ''Brand'' (Swedish: ''Fire'') is a Swedish anarchist and left-wing magazine founded in 1898. Originally, it was run by the Young Socialists, the youth section of the Swedish Social Democratic Party. Since the 1950s, it is not affiliated with any political organization. Legal and political persecution ''Brand'' has been in trouble with the police. The first case was in 1906 and was due to the laws enacted by Karl Staaff that made it illegal to promote pacifism. The laws were known as ''Staaflagarna'' (the Staff laws) or ''Lex Hinke'' (after Hinke Bergegren) who served ten months for breaking the law. In 1908 Einar Håkansson was accused of blasphemy for an article he published in Brand, but he died before it was possible to charge him. Swedish Anarcho-syndicalist Youth Federation
The Swedish Anarcho-Syndicalist Youth Federation, (, SUF) is a youth-based group in Sweden that supports independent working class struggle. The federation was founded in 1993, in part rooted in the militant autonomism, autonomous youth movement that had begun to grow throughout Scandinavia in the early 1990s. Inspiration also came from the Anarcho-syndicalism, anarcho-syndicalist trade union Central Organisation of the Workers of Sweden. Today it is a nationwide federation made up of around 25 local groups, located throughout the entire country. Aside from the Samordningsgruppen, SOG; whose purpose is nothing but to coordinate the activities of the local clubs, several other committees serve various purposes within the federation, such as production of propaganda. Squatting is the action of occupying an abandoned or unoccupied area of land or a building (usually residential) that the squatter does not own, rent or otherwise have lawful permission to use. Punk rock and hardcore punk have created a punk subculture in Sweden since punk music became popular in the 1970s. Punk came to Sweden in the spring of 1977; the event credited as the beginning of the punk movement in Sweden was a one-day festival lined up with Sex Pistols, The Clash, Ramones, and Television.
