Anar Mammadli
Anar Mammadli (; born 1978) is a prominent human rights activist in Azerbaijan. He is active in observing and monitoring elections, and he has repeatedly criticized the conduct of elections by Azerbaijani authorities. On 16 December 2013, Mammadli was arrested and jailed, following outspoken criticism of presidential elections in October 2013. In spite of international protests, Mammadli was sentenced to more than 5 years in jail in May 2014. On 29 September 2014, while still in detention, Mammadli was awarded the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which honours "outstanding" action in defence of human rights. Yevlakh
Yevlakh (, ) is a city in Azerbaijan, 265 km west of the capital of Baku. It is surrounded by but administratively separate from the Yevlakh District. Etymology The settlement is mentioned by the 13th century Armenian historian Stephen Orbelian in the form of ''Evaylakh'' (). The name "Yevlakh" is derived from Old Turkic and means "wetland" according to 20th century Soviet geographer Evgeny Pospelov. History The city of Yevlakh was initially established as a station in the 1880s and known as the "Vagzal" for a long time by the local population. Azerbaijani Presidential Election, 2008
Presidential elections were held in Azerbaijan on 15 October 2008. Ilham Aliyev of the New Azerbaijan Party was re-elected with 89% of the vote. The election was not free and fair. In the lead-up to the election, OSCE highlighted election irregularities and government repression of the opposition. The opposition were not allowed by the government to hold campaign rallies. Students and state workers were coerced into attending pro-Aliyev rallies and were also bussed to polling places to vote for Aliyev. All major opposition parties, including Musavat, the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, Azerbaijan Liberal Party, and the Azerbaijan Democratic Party boycotted the vote because of alleged poll-fixing and oppression of political opponents. A prisoner of conscience (POC) is anyone imprisoned because of their race, sexual orientation, religion, or political views. The term also refers to those who have been imprisoned or persecuted for the nonviolent expression of their conscientiously held beliefs.
