Anaem Omot
Anaem Omot ("Dog's Belly") is the Menominee name for the Sixty Islands archaeological site, a five-square-mile area located on both sides of the Menominee River, forming the Michigan and Wisconsin border. It is the ancestral home of the Menominee Nation. It is an important archaeology site providing the most intact example of pre-European farming in Eastern North America. The boundaries of the Anaem Omot extends inland from the banks of the Menominee River, and runs from the Chalk Hills Dam to the Pike River. The area is part of a land dispute between the Menominee and an open-pit mining proposal. History The name Anaem Omot ("Dogs Belly") relates to a Menominee legend involving otters at play in the Menominee River that were mistaken for dogs. The county's name comes from an Ojibwe word meaning "wild rice eater" used to describe the Menominee people. Back Forty Mine
The Back Forty Mine is a proposed open-pit metallic sulfide mine targeting gold and zinc deposits in Menominee County in the South Central part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula next to the Menominee River. Aquila Resources submitted its first permit applications to the state of Michigan in 2015. The project was originally proposed as a open-pit mine on to extract gold, zinc and other metals. An on-site processing mill will crush and refine minerals and ores through flotation, separation and the use of cyanide. The underground sulfide deposit, discovered in 2001, may also produce smaller volumes of copper, silver and lead. The five key permits needed for the project to begin are a mining permit, an air permit, a water discharge permit, a wetland permit and a dam safety permit.
