Ana Maria Giulietti
Ana Maria Giulietti Harley (born 1945) is a Brazilian biochemist, botanist, and educator known for researching ''Eriocaulaceae'', as well as her work at the University of São Paulo, State University of Feira de Santana, and Vale Institute of Technology. She has described over 70 species and gathered over 300 specimens. She was the 2013 recipient of the José Cuatrecasas Medal for Excellence in Tropical Botany. Early life and education Born in Pesqueira, Brazil, Giulietti went on to receive her Bachelor's at Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco, Recife in 1967. She then studied for a Master's at the Universidade de São Paulo, which she received in 1970. She stayed at the university to undertake doctoral studies, where she investigated the genera ''Eriocaulon'' and '' Leiothrix.'' She received her PhD in 1978. Biochemist
Biochemists are scientists who are trained in biochemistry. They study chemical processes and chemical transformations in living organisms. Biochemists study DNA, proteins and cell parts. The word "biochemist" is a portmanteau of "biological chemist." An academy (Attic Greek: Ἀκαδήμεια; Koine Greek Ἀκαδημία) is an institution of secondary or tertiary higher learning (and generally also research or honorary membership). The name traces back to Plato's school of philosophy, founded approximately 385 BC at Akademia, a sanctuary of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and skill, north of Athens, Greece. Cuatrecasas Medal For Excellence In Tropical Botany
Jose Cuatrecasas Medal for Excellence in Tropical Botany was initiated in 2001 by the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, USA. It is named after José Cuatrecasas, a pioneering botanist and taxonomist who worked on the flora of tropical South America. It is awarded annually to a scientist who has made a very significant contribution to advancing the field of tropical botany. Nominations for the award can be made by all in the Botany Department at the museum. The award is a bronze medal with an image of José Cuatrecasas on one side and the awardee's name and date of presentation on the other. Eriocaulon
''Eriocaulon'' is a genus of about 400 species commonly known as pipeworts, of monocotyledonous flowering plants in the family Eriocaulaceae. The genus is widely distributed, with the centers of diversity for the group occurring in tropical regions, particularly southern Asia and the Americas. A few species extend to temperate regions, with ca. 10 species in the United States, mostly in the southern states from California to Florida, and only two species in Canada; China has 35 species, also mostly southern. Only one species (''E. aquaticum'') occurs in Europe, where it is confined to the Atlantic Ocean coasts of Scotland and Ireland; this species also occurs in eastern North America and is thought to be a relatively recent natural colonist in Europe.
