An American Tragedy (opera)
''An American Tragedy'' is an opera in two acts composed by Tobias Picker, with a libretto by Gene Scheer. This was Picker's fourth opera, written four years after the debut of ''Thérèse Raquin'' (also composed with Scheer). Based on the 1925 Theodore Dreiser novel, ''An American Tragedy'', the opera was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera, and premiered in New York City on December 2, 2005. It received its West Coast premiere by the Santa Monica College Opera Theater in 2010, and was produced at the Glimmerglass Festival in 2014. Roles Synopsis This has been described as a progressive drama of temptation, responsibility, and faith. William Burden (singer)
William Burden is an American opera singer (tenor). Since his professional debut at the San Francisco Opera in 1992, he has performed in lead roles in North America and Europe. Education William Burden was born in Miami, Florida. As an undergraduate he studied at Middlebury College and then entered the Indiana University School of Music where he received his master's degree in Vocal Performance working with Margaret Harshaw. She studied at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music and University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and made her debut in 2000 at New York City Opera as Papagena.
