Amsterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij (ADM) was a Dutch company that repaired ships using dry docks in Amsterdam, Netherlands. After World War II it also built some ships. Context Port of Amsterdam By the early 19th century the once famous commercial center Amsterdam had a very poor connection to the sea. The situation improved by the construction of the Noordhollandsch Kanaal, completed in 1824. It soon turned out that by itself, the canal did not create a suitable port for Amsterdam. This was done by creating the wet docks Oosterdok and Westerdok. Outside of these docks, docking was hindered by tides and other inconveniences. Inside these docks, the 'Rederij der Drijvende Droogdokken' (floating dry docks shipping line) built three wooden floating dry docks in the 1840s. The Koninklijke Nederlandse Stoomboot-Maatschappij (KNSM) (Royal Netherlands Steamship Company) was an Amsterdam-based shipping company that existed from 1856 to 1981. It was once the largest company in Amsterdam and one of the top five shipping lines in the Netherlands. The company operated mid-sized freighters that had limited passenger accommodations. At its peak in 1939, the company had 79 vessels. Of these, 48 were lost during World War II. Amsterdam Wooden Drydock II was the second floating dry dock of Amsterdam, and was moored in the Westerdok. Context A floating Dry dock in the Amsterdam Wet Docks In November 1842 Amsterdam Wooden Drydock I, the first dry dock of Amsterdam had opened. It was a wooden floating dry dock, and was an immediate success, servicing 64 ships in just under a year. At the time Amsterdam had two large wet docks: Westerdok and Oosterdok. A belt is a loop of flexible material used to link two or more rotating shafts mechanically, most often parallel. A line shaft is a power-driven rotating shaft for power transmission that was used extensively from the Industrial Revolution until the early 20th century. Prior to the widespread use of electric motors small enough to be connected directly to each piece of machinery, line shafting was used to distribute power from a large central power source to machinery throughout a workshop or an industrial complex. A steam hammer, also called a drop hammer, is an industrial power hammer driven by steam that is used for tasks such as shaping forgings and driving piles.
