Amsterdam String Quartet
The Amsterdam String Quartet was founded in 2000 by 4 international, specialist period instrument string players: Alida Schat and John Wilson Meyer (violin), Simon Murphy (viola), and Thomas Pitt (cello). The quartet performs works by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, and their lesser known contemporaries. The quartet has its own series in Amsterdam's Het Concertgebouw and has toured extensively. Simon Murphy (conductor)
Simon Francis Murphy (born 26 August 1973) is a Dutch-based, Australian conductor and viola player with a focus on the music of the 18th and early 19th centuries. He is originally from Balmain, Sydney, Australia. Murphy is notable for his work in rediscovering and reintroducing 18th-century European and symphonic composers, particularly from and related to the Mannheim School (Mannheimer Schule). Murphy has also popularized the previously unknown Dutch 18th-century symphonic tradition through performances on radio and TV broadcasts and the first CD recording of symphonic heritage. In particular, he has focused on 18th-century composers Joseph Schmitt "The Dutch Haydn" and Francesco Zappa, making the first CD recordings and new editions of their symphonic works. Murphy has won the Dutch Edison Award and Luxembourg's Supersonic Award. Channel Classics
Channel Classics Records is a record label from the Netherlands, specializing in classical music. The managing director and producer is C. Jared Sacks, who grew up in Boston. Sacks was schooled as a professional horn player at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. With fifteen years of experience in making music, Sacks decided to turn his hobby of making musical recordings into his work in 1987. The record label started in 1990 and was called after the street where he lived at the time, the Kanaalstraat in Amsterdam. In 2006, Channel Classics began releasing records in Super Audio CD format by Chinese artists, including the China National Symphony Orchestra. Channel Classics Records released music from musicians like Iván Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra, Dejan Lazić, Lavinia Meijer, Rachel Podger and Candida Thompson.
