Amshit
Amsheet (, '; also spelled Amchit) is a seaside town and municipality in the Byblos District of Keserwan-Jbeil Governorate, Lebanon, about 40 km north of Beirut. The town's average elevation is 140 meters above sea level and its total land area is 595 hectares. Its inhabitants are predominantly Maronites, although there is a Shia Muslim minority. There are many old churches in Amsheet (more than a hundred and some old synagogues.). Demographics Amsheet's population is around 25,000. The majority of the inhabitants are Maronite Christians. However, there is a significant Shia Muslim minority, who largely moved to Amsheet from predominantly Shia villages in the nearby mountains. Most Shia in Amsheet live in the Kfar Saleh neighborhood. Afifa Karam (, ; July 22, 1883 – July 28, 1924) was a Lebanese-American journalist, novelist, and translator. A writer for the New York City-based Arabic-language daily newspaper ''Al-Hoda'', Karam authored three original Arabic novels as well as a number of Arabic translations of novels from English and French. She was an advocate for women's rights in the Mahjar, or Arab diaspora, and of Arab Feminism. Early life Afifa Karam was born in Amsheet, then in the Mount Lebanon Mutasarrifate, to Yusuf Salih Karam (1822-1895) and Frusina Habib Sharbel. Her family were wealthy Maronites, and her father Yusuf was a doctor in the Ottoman army. Shia Muslim Communities In Lebanon
Shia Islam is the second-largest branch of Islam. It holds that Muhammad designated Ali ibn Abi Talib () as both his political successor (caliph) and as the spiritual leader of the Muslim community (imam). Maronites (; ) are a Syriac Christian ethnoreligious group native to the Eastern Mediterranean and the Levant (particularly Lebanon) whose members belong to the Maronite Church. The largest concentration has traditionally resided near Mount Lebanon in modern Lebanon. Antoine Khalil Issa (14 August 1955 – 30 March 2025) was an Australian politician who was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing Granville for the Liberal Party from 2011 until the 2015 election when he lost the seat to Labor's Julia Finn. Sabah Khoury (born November 10, 1982) is a former Lebanese basketball player. He coaches Champville SC now in the Lebanese basketball league . He formerly played for Sagesse Club, Amchit Club and Al Mouttahed Tripoli and Champville Club in the Lebanese Basketball League, and Qingdao Doublestar in the Chinese Basketball League. Salwa Al Katrib (also spelled ''Salwa Al Qatrib'', ; 17 September 1953 – 4 March 2009) was a Lebanese singer and stage actress best known for her roles in ''Emerald Princess'' (''Al Amira Zmurrod'') and ''Mountain Girl'' (''Bent Al Jabal'').
