Amnat Charoen Province
Amnat Charoen (, ; , ) is one of Thailand's seventy-six Provinces of Thailand, provinces (''changwat'') and lies Isan#Administrative divisions, central northeastern Thailand, also called Isan. Neighbouring provinces are (clockwise from the south) Ubon Ratchathani province, Ubon Ratchathani, Yasothon province, Yasothon, and Mukdahan province, Mukdahan. To the east it borders Savannakhet province, Savannakhet of Laos. Its name is a concatenation of อำนาจ ("authority, power") and เจริญ ("prosperous"). Geography The province is in the Mekong valley. In dry season, from February to May, water in Mekong River declines, and allows islands to appear. Islands include Kaeng Tanglang at Si Sombun Village, close to Amphoe Chanuman, and Kaeng Hin Khan at Ban Hin Khan, 30 kilometres south of Amphoe Chanuman. An amphoe (sometimes also ''amphur'', , )—usually translated as "district"—is the second level administrative subdivision of Thailand. Groups of ''amphoe'' or districts make up the Provinces of Thailand, provinces, and are analogous to county, counties. The chief district officer is ''Nai Amphoe'' (). ''Amphoe'' are divided into tambon, ''tambons'', (), or sub-districts. Altogether Thailand has 928 districts, including the 50 districts of Bangkok, which are called ''Khet (country subdivision), khet'' (เขต) since the Bangkok administrative reform of 1972. Mueang Amnat Charoen (, ; , ) is the capital district ('' amphoe mueang'') of Amnat Charoen province, northeastern Thailand. History Originally Amnat Charoen was a ''mueang'' under ''Mueang'' Khemarat. In the ''Thesaphiban'' administrative reforms around 1900 it was reassigned to Ubon Ratchathani and converted into a district. It was later named Bung after the central ''tambon''. In 1939 it was renamed Amnat Charoen. In 1993 the new province Amnat Charoen was created, and the district was then renamed Mueang Amnat Charoen.
