Ammann A1 Tilings
In geometry, an Ammann A1 tiling is a tessellation, tiling from the 6 piece prototile set shown on the right. They were found in 1977 by Robert Ammann. Ammann was inspired by the Aperiodic tiling#Aperiodic hierarchical tilings, Robinson tilings, which were found by Raphael Robinson, Robinson in 1971. The A1 tiles are one of List of aperiodic sets of tiles#List, five sets of tiles discovered by Ammann and described in ''Tilings and patterns''. The A1 tile set is Aperiodic tiling, aperiodic, i.e. they tile the whole Euclidean plane, but only without ever creating a periodic tiling. An aperiodic tiling is a non-periodic tiling with the additional property that it does not contain arbitrarily large periodic regions or patches. A set of tile-types (or prototiles) is aperiodic if copies of these tiles can form only non-periodic tilings. The Penrose tilings are a well-known example of aperiodic tilings.
