American Technical Publishers (ATP) is an employee-owned publishing company located in Orland Park, Illinois. ATP publishes training materials for career and technical education, industrial training, and apprenticeship programs. It is the only employee-owned career and technical publisher in the country. History ATP was founded in 1898 by R. T. Miller, Jr. as the American Technical Society (ATS). The ATS published instructional materials for the American School of Correspondence, which was also founded by Miller. In 1902, Miller moved both companies from Boston to Chicago. Today, the building that housed both companies is recognized as a Chicago landmark. During World War II, the ATS changed its primary publishing material to vocational training materials for preparation of industrial workers for the war effort. Orland Park is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States, with a small portion in Will County. The village is a suburb of Chicago. Per the 2020 census, Orland Park had a population of 58,703. Located 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Chicago, Orland Park is close to several interstate highways, with the I-80 east-west coast connector as its southern border. The Metra commuter rail system links it to the Chicago Loop and from there to O'Hare and Midway airports. History Orland Park was first settled in 1834, with Henry Taylor being the area's first settler. The American School of Correspondence is an American distance education high school in Lansing, Illinois. It was founded in 1897. History The American School of Correspondence (ASC) was founded in 1897. It was located in the Hyde Park, Chicago, neighborhood from 1912 to 1996, when it moved to south suburban Lansing. The L. L. Cooke School of Electricity was an early correspondence course on electrical theory and practice. The course covered various topics in electrical technology from alarms to wiring. The correspondence course company was based in Chicago, and operated at least as early as 1927. Its courses were published by the ASC. Moraine Valley Community College is a public community college in Palos Hills, Illinois. Founded in 1967, it is surrounded by the Cook County Forest Preserves. The college also operates satellite centers in Blue Island and Tinley Park, Illinois.
