American Hot Wax
''American Hot Wax'' is a 1978 biographical film directed by Floyd Mutrux with a screenplay by John Kaye from a story by John Kaye and Art Linson. The film tells the story of pioneering disc jockey Alan Freed, who in the 1950s helped introduce and popularize rock and roll, and is often credited with coining the term "rock 'n' roll". The film starred Tim McIntire, Fran Drescher, Jay Leno, Laraine Newman, Jeff Altman, and Moosie Drier. It also featured musical performances by Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Frankie Ford, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and Brooklyn Dreams as "Professor La Plano and The Planotones". The film was not a box-office success. A&M Records released a two-record soundtrack album featuring the film's live Brooklyn Paramount performances on record one (in stereo) and the film's soundtrack (the original monophonic hit recordings) on record two. Floyd Mutrux (born June 25, 1941) is an American stage and film director, writer, producer, and screenwriter. Career He began his work in Hollywood as an uncredited writer for ''Two-Lane Blacktop'' (1971). His career continued with '' The Christian Licorice Store'' (1971; writer/producer), '' Dusty and Sweets McGee'' (1971; writer, producer and director) and '' Freebie and the Bean'' (1974; story and executive producer). Brooklyn Paramount Theater
The Brooklyn Paramount is a music venue in Downtown Brooklyn, New York City, at the intersection of Flatbush Avenue, Flatbush and DeKalb Avenues. It opened in 1928 as a movie palace that occasionally hosted jazz, blues and early rock and roll concerts. In 1962, the theatre was closed and converted into a basketball court for Long Island University (LIU)'s athletic teams. A renovation to turn the building back to a performing arts venue began in 2017, and the theater reopened in 2024. Brooklyn Dreams were an American singing group of the late 1970s, mixing R&B harmonies with contemporary dance/disco music and best known for a number of collaborations with singer Donna Summer. The band consisted of Joe "Bean" Esposito, Eddie Hokenson and Bruce Sudano. Esposito provided lead vocals for the band and played guitar, while Sudano played keyboards and Hokenson played drums and occasionally sang lead vocals. Albert James "Alan" Freed (December 15, 1921 – January 20, 1965) was an American disc jockey. He also produced and promoted large traveling concerts with various acts, helping to spread the importance of rock and roll music throughout North America, including popularizing the term "rock and roll".
