The Brazil Open or Aberto do Brasil is an annual golf tournament held in Brazil. It was founded in 1945 and was an event on the Tour de las Américas on several occasions, most recently in 2005. It is now an event on PGA Tour Americas. History Until the early 1980s, the tournament was a popular stop for many of the world's top professionals, and can boast major winners Sam Snead, Billy Casper, Gary Player, Raymond Floyd, Jerry Pate and Hale Irwin in addition to superstars of South American golf, Roberto De Vicenzo and Ángel Cabrera, amongst its list of champions. The most successful player remains Mário Gonzalez, who won a total of eight titles, including seven out of nine between 1946 and 1955 (no tournament was held in 1947). Jerry Pate
Jerome Kendrick Pate (born September 16, 1953) is an American professional golfer on the PGA Tour Champions, formerly on the PGA Tour. As a 22-year-old rookie, he won the U.S. Open in 1976. Early life Born in Macon, Georgia, he was one of six children in his family. His father and grandfather get him into golf early and the family spend summers in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, playing golf. At young age the family moved to Alabama, where Pate learned the game at Anniston Country Club. In 1967 they moved to Florida because of Pate's fathers work and Pate grew up in the panhandle of Florida at Pensacola. The 2024 PGA Tour Americas was the inaugural season of PGA Tour Americas, a third-tier tour operated and run by the PGA Tour. Changes for 2024 The inaugural schedule for the new tour was released in November 2023. The European Tour, currently titled as the DP World Tour for sponsorship reasons, and legally the PGA European Tour or the European Tour Group, is the leading men's professional golf tour in Europe. The organisation also operates the European Senior Tour (for players aged 50 or older) and the developmental Challenge Tour; the second tier of men's professional golf in Europe. Pedro Álvares Cabral (; born Pedro Álvares de Gouveia; ) was a Portuguese nobleman, military commander, navigator and explorer regarded as the European discoverer of Brazil. He was the first human in history to ever be on four continents, uniting all of them in his famous voyage of 1500, where he also conducted the first substantial exploration of the northeast coast of South America and claimed it for Portugal. While details of Cabral's early life remain unclear, it is known that he came from a minor noble family and received a good education. Before the arrival of the Europeans, the lands that now constitute Brazil were occupied, fought over and settled by diverse tribes. Mário Gonzalez (golfer)
Mário Gonzalez (22 November 1922 – 29 July 2019) was a Brazilian professional golfer. He was one of the first players from his country to have enjoyed success on the international circuit and was known as the "father of Brazilian golf". Amateur career As an amateur, Gonzalez had a great deal of success and built a reputation around the world. He won the Brazil Amateur Championship nine times, the Brazil Open (golf), Brazil Open twice, the Argentine Open in 1941, and the Spanish Open in 1947. He also played in several tournaments and matches in the United States; in 1941 he finished in a tie for sixth place in Chicago Open and tied a match with Bobby Jones (golfer), Bobby Jones. He had one other top-ten finish in a PGA Tour event, which came at the 1946 Pensacola Open.
