The American Club Taipei (), formerly known as the American Club in China ("ACC"), is a private member-owned club that serves the international community in the Greater Taipei area. The ACC is located in Zhongshan District, Taipei, Zhongshan District, Taipei. History Founded in 1968, the ACC is located on the premises of what was the MAAG NCO Open Mess - Club 63, a US enlisted personnel club for Military Assistance Advisory Group, MAAG Non-commissioned officer, NCOs established in 1957. In the mid-1970s Club 63 was transferred to the U.S. Navy and renamed as the China Seas Club. With the withdrawal of the United States Taiwan Defense Command, U.S. military from the island, the China Seas Club ceased operation and was re-purposed as a private club for the U.S. expatriate business community in Taipei, becoming the ACC. Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG) is a designation for United States military advisors sent to other countries to assist in the training of conventional armed forces and facilitate military aid. Although numerous MAAGs operated around the world throughout the 1940s–1970s, including in Yugoslavia after 1951, the most famous MAAGs were those active in Southeast Asia before and during the Vietnam War. Typically, the personnel of MAAGs were considered to be technical staff attached to, and enjoying the privileges of, the US diplomatic mission in a country. The United States Taiwan Defense Command (USTDC; zh, t=美軍協防台灣司令部) was a sub-unified command of the United States Armed Forces operating in Taiwan. History The United States Taiwan Defense Command was originally formed as the Formosa Liaison Center (founded in 1955 after the signature of the Sino-American Mutual Defense Treaty of December 1954 and the First Taiwan Strait Crisis of Sept. 1954). In November 1955, the FLC became the Taiwan Defense Command. The command reported directly to the Commander-in-Chief Pacific (CINCPAC). The American Club, 209 Fuzhou Rd, Shanghai was built by László Hudec of Curry & Co. between 1923 and 1925 in the American Georgian Style. Originally built as an all-male club after purchasing the site in 1922, it was a popular club for expatriates. A six-storey building plus basement, around 1000m2 per floor, designed in the common steel and concrete construction prevalent along The Bund area of Shanghai. Taipei American School (TAS; ; abbreviation TAS) is a non-profit private international school with an American-based curriculum located in Tianmu, Shilin District, Taipei, Taiwan.
