Amerer Air was a cargo airline based in Linz, Austria. It was Austria's largest dedicated cargo airline, operating services from Linz and Cologne throughout Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Its main base was Linz Airport. History The airline was established and started operations in 1995 with one Fokker F27 Friendship, Fokker F27 Mk500. Between 1997 and 2006 two Lockheed L-188 Electras were operated for United Parcel Service and TNT N.V. In 1999, international long distance road transport was introduced to supplement air freight activities. The airline was owned by Heinz Peter Amerer (50%) and Susanne Amerer (50%) and had 40 employees. The Lockheed L-188 Electra is an American turboprop airliner built by Lockheed Corporation, Lockheed. First flown in 1957, it was the first large turboprop airliner built in the United States. With its fairly high power-to-weight ratio, huge propellers and very short wings (resulting in the majority of the wingspan being enveloped in propwash), large Fowler flaps which significantly increased effective wing area when extended, and four-engined design, the airplane had airfield performance capabilities unmatched by many jet transport aircraft even today—particularly on short runways and high altitude airfields. Initial sales were good, but after two fatal crashes that led to expensive modifications to fix a design defect, no more were ordered. The Fokker F27 Friendship is a turboprop airliner developed and manufactured by the Dutch aircraft manufacturer Fokker. It is the most numerous post-war aircraft manufactured in the Netherlands; the F27 was also one of the most successful European airliners of its era. The F27 was developed during the early 1950s with the intent of producing a capable successor to the earlier piston engine-powered airliners that had become commonplace on the market, such as the Douglas DC-3.
