Labour Party (Malta)
The Labour Party ( mt, Partit Laburista, PL), formerly known as the Malta Labour Party ( mt, Partit tal-Ħaddiema, MLP), is one of the two major political parties in Malta, along with the Nationalist Party. It sits on the centre-left of the political spectrum. The party was founded in 1920 as the Chamber of Labour by a small group of trade unionists. Its prominent member Paul Boffa served as the first Labour prime minister between 1947 and 1950. Ideologically, the party was orientated towards democratic socialism and other left-wing stances until the early 1990s, when it followed the lead of like-minded Western social-democratic parties like Britain's New Labour. 2022 Maltese General Election
General elections were held in Malta on 26 March 2022 to elect members of the House of Representatives. The Labour Party (PL), which has governed Malta since 2013, retained its majority in the House of Representatives in the June 2017 election, and Joseph Muscat remained prime minister. Muscat resigned in January 2020, and was succeeded by Robert Abela, and later that year, Bernard Grech succeeded Adrian Delia as the leader of the Nationalist Party. In total, six parties had filed candidates in the general election. The campaign period was noted as the quietest election period in decades. A gender quota is a tool used by countries and parties to increase women's representation in legislature. Women are largely underrepresented in parliaments and account for a 25.8% average in parliaments globally. As of November 2021, gender quotas have been adopted in 132 countries. Around the world, quotas vary greatly in their enforcement and the stage of electoral process targeted, creating three main types of quotas: legislated candidate quotas, voluntary party quotas, and reserved seats.
