Amanda Bosh
Amanda Bosh is an American planetary scientist and observational astronomer best known for her work on small Solar System objects. She is the Executive Director of Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona and is involved which the Lowell Observatory Native American Outreach program, which she co-founded. Education In 1987, Bosh earned a bachelor degree from MIT where she double majored in Earth, atmospheric, and planetary sciences (EAPS) and materials science and engineering. She continued her education at MIT where she was advised by James L. Elliot, earning a PhD in EAPS in 1994. Bosh's PhD thesis was titled "Stellar Occultation Studies of Saturn's Rings with the Hubble Space Telescope" and she used stellar occultations to investigate the structure and dynamics of Saturn's rings. Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy
The Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) was an 80/20 joint project of NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) to construct and maintain an airborne observatory. NASA awarded the contract for the development of the aircraft, operation of the observatory and management of the American part of the project to the Universities Space Research Association (USRA) in 1996. The DSI (German SOFIA Institute; ) managed the German parts of the project which were primarily science-and telescope-related. SOFIA's telescope saw first light on May 26, 2010. SOFIA was the successor to the Kuiper Airborne Observatory. During 10-hour, overnight flights, it observed celestial magnetic fields, star-forming regions, comets, nebulae, and the Galactic Center. 2060 Chiron
2060 Chiron is a ringed small Solar System body in the outer Solar System, orbiting the Sun between Saturn and Uranus. Discovered in 1977 by Charles Kowal, it was the first-identified member of a new class of objects now known as centaurs—bodies orbiting between the asteroid belt and the Kuiper belt. 944 Hidalgo, discovered in 1920, also fits this definition, but was not identified as belonging to a distinct population. The Gerard P. Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) was a national facility operated by NASA to support research in infrared astronomy. The observation platform was a highly modified Lockheed C-141A Starlifter jet transport aircraft (s/n: 6110, registration: N714NA, callsign: NASA 714) with a range of 6,000 nautical miles (11,000 km), capable of conducting research operations at altitudes of up to 48,000 feet (14 km). Lowell Observatory
Lowell Observatory is an astronomical observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, United States. The atmosphere of Pluto is the layer of gasses that surround the dwarf planet Pluto. It consists mainly of nitrogen (N2), with minor amounts of methane (CH4) and carbon monoxide (CO), all of which are vaporized from surface ices on Pluto's surface.
