Alves (mythology)
Alves is a surname that appears to originate both from Portugal and Scotland (in Scotland where a variation of the name can appear as ''Alvis''). It is debatable whether the surname appeared first in one country or the other, since it is more prevalent in Portugal, but registered as far back as the 13th century in the church records at Alves, Moray, Northern Scotland. If from Portugal, it will have originated from the Germanic patronym ''son of Álvaro'' (Alvar, Alvarus). João Alves (13 December 1925 − 28 June 2013) was a Portuguese Catholic bishop. Alves was born on 13 December 1925 in Torres Novas. Ordained in 1951, Alves was named bishop in 1975. Robert Alves (1745–1794), was a Scottish poet and prose writer. Alves was born in Elgin on 11 December 1745. His father's circumstances were humble, but as a boy of promise he was placed at the Elgin grammar school, where he made such good use of his opportunities that when sent to Aberdeen he took at Marischal College the highest bursary of the year in which he competed.
