Alternative 2020 ( ''Dutch'': Alternatief 2020) (A20) has been a political party in Suriname since June 2019. History The party is led by the pastor of the Pentecostal Full Gospel Church Logos International in Paramaribo. The party is based on Christian norms and values. Reyme also says he is open to people from other religious groups, because all religions strive for the same thing. When he held the first information meeting of the party in the Logos church, his initiative was negatively received. The proclamation of Alternative 2020 took place on October 12, 2019, in the ballroom of the ; this meeting was very well attended. In addition, the party is focused on corruption, which the country suffers from according to its founder. The party wants to put an end to patronage politics. 2025 Surinamese General Election
General elections were held in Suriname on 25 May 2025. No party obtained a majority in the 51-seat National Assembly, with the National Democratic Party (NDP) winning 18 seats followed by the ruling Progressive Reform Party of President Chan Santokhi at 17. Jennifer Geerlings-Simons
Jennifer Geerlings-Simons ( Simons; born 5 September 1953) is a Surinamese politician. She served as Chairwoman of the National Assembly of Suriname between 2010 and 2020, becoming the second female chairman of the Surinamese Parliament. In 2024, she became the leader of the National Democratic Party. Biography Simons was first elected as a member of the National Assembly in 1996, representing the district of Paramaribo. She served as one of the vice-chairpersons of the National Democratic Party, which was founded by Dési Bouterse. She was leader of the parliamentary fraction from 2000 until 2006. In April 2012, Simons was accused by the opposition in the parliament of dictatorial behaviour because of her decision to forbid members of the parliament from referring to the amnesty law of April 2012 during a debate on the anti-stalking law. National Democratic Party (Suriname)
The National Democratic Party (, NDP) is a political party in Suriname. It was founded on 4 July 1987 by Surinamese leader Dési Bouterse, and was one of the first parties in the country to have a stable base of support across different ethnic groups. In the 2015 general election the party scored 45.56% of the vote and 26 of 51 seats in parliament. NDP chairman Bouterse was elected President of Suriname on 19 July 2010, after he won the 2010 elections with his Mega Combination of which the NDP was the dominant party. The party won the 2015 elections as well, winning 26 seats against an alliance of 7 (later 6) opposition parties. In the 2020 elections, the NDP won 16 of the 51 seats. General elections were held in Suriname on 25 May 2020. The elections occurred concurrently with an economic crisis in Suriname, as well as the COVID-19 crisis. Electoral system The 51 seats in the National Assembly are elected using party-list proportional representation under the D'Hondt method in ten multi-member constituencies containing between two and seventeen seats.
