Alta (town)
Alta ( se, Áltá; fkv, Alattio; fi, Alattio) is a town in Alta Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. The town is the administrative centre of the municipality and the major commercial centre in the western part of the county. The town is located on the southern end of Altafjorden at the mouth of the river Altaelva. There are several suburbs around the town. Kåfjord, Kvenvik, and Jiepmaluokta lie to the west; Øvre Alta and Tverrelvdalen lie to the south; and Rafsbotn lies to the east. The famous rock carvings at Alta lie just to the west of the town. The town of Alta has three churches: the historic Alta Church in Bossekop, the relatively new Elvebakken Church in Elvebakken, and the Northern Lights Cathedral (the new "main" church for the municipality that was completed in 2013). Alta IF
Alta Idrettsforening is a sports club from Alta, Norway. The club is most known for its association football department, which played in the 1. divisjon until 2014. Alta currently plays in 2. divisjon, the third tier of the Norwegian football league system. The club was newly promoted for the 2008 season; its last stint up to that time in the division came in 2005, when they finished last. The team finished 14th in the 2009 season. In 2012 a new relegation came after finishing last once again. It took them only one year to come back. They play at Alta Idrettspark, or indoor at Finnmarkshallen when snow and other weather conditions render the pitch unusable. Their attendance record of about 3,000 was set in 1995 against Rosenborg. Loppa ( sme, Láhppi and fkv, Lappea) is a municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Øksfjord. Other villages in Loppa include Andsnes, Bergsfjord, Langfjordhamn, Loppa, Nuvsvåg, Øksfjordbotn, Sandland, and Sør-Tverrfjord. The municipality is the 167th largest by area out of the 356 municipalities in Norway. Loppa is the 341st most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 859. Alta District Court ( no, Alta tingrett) was the district court based in the town of Alta in Finnmark county, Norway. The court served the municipalities of Alta and Loppa. The court was subordinate to the Hålogaland Court of Appeal. The court was led by the chief judge () Bjørnar K. Leistad. This court employed a chief judge, another judge and four prosecutors. The court was a court of first instance. Its judicial duties were mainly to settle criminal cases and to resolve civil litigation as well as bankruptcy. Finnmark University College ( no, Høgskolen i Finnmark or HiF) was a university college with three campuses throughout Finnmark, Norway. In August 2013 Finnmark University College and the University of Tromso merged to form what is now called the "University of Tromso - Norway's Arctic University". The Northern Lights Cathedral - Alta Church ( no, Nordlyskatedralen - Alta Kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Alta Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county. It is located in the central part of the town of Alta. It is the main church for the Alta parish as well as the seat of the Alta prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland. Elvebakken Church
Elvebakken Church ( no, Elvebakken kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Alta Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It is located in the Elvebakken area in the town of Alta. It is one of the churches for the Alta parish which is part of the Alta prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland. The white, wooden church was built in a long church style in 1964 using plans drawn up by the architect Håkon Soltveit. The church seats about 210 people. History The people of the Elvebakken area of Alta began pushing for their own local church in 1911. The had been advocating moving the Kåfjord Church to Elvebakken when the copper plant closed. After World War I, people raised money to build a church in Elvebakken, but the banking crisis led to the money collected being lost when the Hammerfest Sparekasse bank failed. Alta Church ( no, Alta kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Alta Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It is located in the Bossekop area in the town of Alta. It is one of the churches for the Alta parish which is part of the Alta prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland. The white, wooden church was built in a long church style in 1858 using plans drawn up by the architect Stephen Henry Thomas. The church seats about 230 people. History The first church built in Alta was the present building which was completed in 1858. The building was consecrated by the Bishop Knud Gislesen. The church was heavily damaged by the retreating German army in 1944 near the end of World War II. The church benches were burned, the windows were broken, and the electrical system was ruined.
