Allobaccha Similis
''Allobaccha'' is a genus of hoverfly with a large number of species. It was originally created as a subgenus of ''Baccha''. Many species have an elongated wasp like abdomen and adults as well as larvae are predators of soft-bodied Hemiptera. Species Species in the genus include: *''Allobaccha atra, A. atra'' (Van Doesburg, 1959) *''Allobaccha basalis, A. basalis'' (Francis Walker (entomologist), Walker, 1861) *''Allobaccha bequaerti, A. bequaerti'' (Charles Howard Curran, Curran, 1929) *''Allobaccha denhoedi, A. denhoedi'' (Van Doesburg, 1959) *''Allobaccha flavipes, A. flavipes'' (Van Doesburg, 1959) *''Allobaccha fumosa, A. fumosa'' Dirickx, 2010 *''Allobaccha inversa, A. inversa'' (Charles Howard Curran, Curran, 1929) *''Allobaccha liberia, A. liberia'' (Charles Howard Curran, Curran, 1929) *''Allobaccha loriae, A. loriae'' (De Meijere, 1908) *''Allobaccha macgregori, A. macgregori'' (Charles Howard Curran, Curran, 1929) *''Allobaccha madecassa, A. madecassa'' Dirickx, 2010 *' ...

Charles Howard Curran
Charles Howard Curran (20 March 189423 January 1972) was a Canadian entomologist who specialized in Diptera. Curran's main taxonomic interests were in brachyceran flies, particularly the flower flies Syrphidae, in which he described 723 species. He described 2,648 species over his career. He was active in the study of insect control. His 1934 work ''The Families and Genera of North American Diptera'' was an important and comprehensive work on the topic of North American fly genera. Biography Charles Howard Curran was born in Orillia, Ontario, in 1894. He was one of seven children, and preferred to go by his middle name Howard or his initials C. H. rather than Charles. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force and was sent to France to fight in World War I, serving from 1916 to 1918 as a machine gunner. Upon his return to Canada, he studied at the Ontario Agricultural College, gaining his bachelors degree in 1922. Continuing his story of entomology, he earned a Master ...

Christian Rudolph Wilhelm Wiedemann
Christian Rudolph Wilhelm Wiedemann (7 December 1770 – 31 December 1840) was a German physician, historian, naturalist and entomologist. He is best known for his studies of world Diptera, but he also studied Hymenoptera and Coleoptera, although far less expertly. Biography Wiedemann’s father, Conrad Eberhard Wiedemann (1722–1804) was an art dealer and his mother, Dorothea Frederike (née Raspe) (1741–1804) was the daughter of an accountant in the Royal Mining Service and also interested in the arts. After his education in Brunswick, he matriculated in 1790 to the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Jena where he was a contemporary of the poet Friedrich von Hardenberg. While attending university, Wiedemann, was one of the many pupils of Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, and travelled to Saxony and Bohemia. He obtained his doctoral degree in 1792 with a thesis entitled ''Dissertatio inauguralis sistens vitia gennus humanum debilitantia''. He then went to Englan ...

Günther Enderlein
Günther Enderlein (7 July 1872 – 11 August 1968) was a German zoologist, entomologist, microbiologist, researcher, physician for 60 years, and later a manufacturer of pharmaceutical products. Enderlein received international renown for his insect research, and in Germany became famous due to his concept of the pleomorphism of microorganisms and his hypotheses about the origins of cancer, based on the work of other scientists. His hypotheses about pleomorphism and cancer have now been disproved by science and have only some historical importance today. Some of his concepts, however, are still popular in alternative medicine. A blood test is named after him: ''dark field microscopy according to Enderlein''. Life Enderlein was born in Leipzig, the son of a teacher. He studied in Leipzig and Berlin and got his PhD in 1898 as a zoologist. He became professor in 1924. First he worked as assistant at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin, and went later to Stettin, now Szczec ...
