Allen R Miller
Allen R. Miller (1942–2010) was an American mathematician. Miller was a major contributor to the field of special functions, especially confluent hypergeometric functions. Biography A native of Brooklyn, New York, Miller attended George W. Wingate High School and Brooklyn College, where he graduated in 1965 with a degree in mathematics. Miller began his professional career at the Ballistics Research Laboratory at the Aberdeen Proving Ground where he worked with physicist Jane Dewey. In 1967, he moved to the Naval Research Laboratory where he developed high-fidelity mathematical models of interactions between physical systems and electromagnetic fields. Unlike most pure mathematicians of the time, Miller implemented simulations of his models on early supercomputers. Specular Reflection
Specular reflection, or regular reflection, is the mirror-like reflection of waves, such as light, from a surface. The law of reflection states that a reflected ray of light emerges from the reflecting surface at the same angle to the surface normal as the incident ray, but on the opposing side of the surface normal in the plane formed by the incident and reflected rays. Radar is a detection system that uses radio waves to determine the distance ('' ranging''), angle, and radial velocity of objects relative to the site. Alhazen's problem, also known as Alhazen's billiard problem, is a mathematical problem in geometrical optics first formulated by Ptolemy in 150 AD. It is named for the 11th-century Arab mathematician Alhazen (''Ibn al-Haytham'') who presented a geometric solution in his '' Book of Optics''. The algebraic solution involves quartic equations and was found in 1965 by . Geometric formulation The problem comprises drawing lines from two points, meeting at a third point on the circumference of a circle and making equal angles with the normal at that point (specular reflection). Thus, its main application in optics is to solve the problem, "Find the point on a spherical convex mirror at which a ray of light coming from a given point must strike in order to be reflected to another point."
