Allen M. Steele
Allen Mulherin Steele, Jr. (born January 19, 1958) is an American journalist and science fiction author. Background Steele was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on January 19, 1958. He was introduced to science fiction fandom attending meetings of Nashville's science fiction club. He graduated high school from the Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, received a bachelor's degree from New England College and a master's from the University of Missouri. Writing Before he established himself as a science fiction author, he spent several years working as a journalist. Steele began publishing short stories in 1988. His early novels formed a future history beginning with ''Orbital Decay'' and continuing through ''Labyrinth of Night''. The Hugo Award is an annual literary award for the best science fiction or fantasy works and achievements of the previous year, given at the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) and chosen by its members. The award is administered by the Worldcon#World Science Fiction Society, World Science Fiction Society. It is named after Hugo Gernsback, the founder of the pioneering science fiction magazine ''Amazing Stories''. Hugos were first given in 1953, at the 11th World Science Fiction Convention, and have been awarded every year since 1955. In 2010, Wired (magazine), ''Wired'' called the Hugo "the premier award in the science fiction genre", while ''The Guardian'' has called it the most important science fiction award alongside the Nebula Award. Originally titled ''Astounding Stories of Super-Science'', the first issue was dated January 1930, published by William Clayton (publisher), William Clayton, and edited by Harry Bates (author), Harry Bates. Clayton went bankrupt in 1933 and the magazine was sold to Street & Smith. The new editor was F. Mike Resnick
Michael Diamond Resnick (; March 5, 1942 – January 9, 2020) was an American science fiction writer and editor. He won five Hugo awards and a Nebula award, and was the guest of honor at Chicon 7. He was the executive editor of the defunct magazine '' Jim Baen's Universe,'' and the co-creator (with Shahid Mahmud of Arc Manor) and editor of ''Galaxy's Edge'' magazine. Biography Resnick was born in Chicago on March 5, 1942. He was a 1959 graduate of Highland Park High School in Highland Park, Illinois. He sold his first piece of writing in 1957, while still in high school. He attended the University of Chicago from 1959 to 1961 and met his future wife, Carol L. Cain, there. The couple began dating in mid-December 1960 and were engaged by the end of the month. They were married in 1961. ''The Tranquillity Alternative'' is a science fiction and space drama novel written by Allen Steele published by Ace Books in 1996. The author's sixth novel, it tells an alternate history in which the United States placed Nuclear weapons delivery, nuclear missiles on the Moon in 1960. The country then loses interest in the Space Race and decides to send astronauts to destroy the missiles. That is when North Korea decides to steal the missiles. Context The original idea for this work is already seen in the author's early writings, as seen in his short novel ''Operation Blue Horizon'', published in ''Worcester Monthly'' magazine in September 1988.
