Allan Bergkvist
Allan Bergkvist (10 July 1908 – 13 September 1985) was a Swedish chess player. Biography Allan Bergkvist was one of Sweden's strongest chess players from the 1930s to the 1950s. He was a participant of the official and unofficial Swedish Chess Championships. His best result in this tournament was shared 3rd - 4th place with Nils Bergkvist in 1938. Swedish Chess Championship
The first Swedish Champion was Gustaf Nyholm, who won two matches against winners of national tournaments: Berndtsson in Göteborg and Löwenborg in Stockholm in 1917. Up until 1931 Swedish Chess Championships decided by match play. In the 1930s, Gideon Ståhlberg held the title in spite of results of the national tournaments. Nils Valentin Bergkvist or Nils Bergqvist (born 13 August 1900 in Södertälje– died ?) was a Swedish chess master. He shared first in the national tournament at Lund 1933, took 5th at Stockholm 1937 (Reuben Fine won), played a match with Salo Landau at Stockholm 1937, twice tied for 3rd-4th, with Ernst Larsson at Kalmar 1938 (Erik Lundin won), and with Allan Bergkvist at Stockholm 1938 ( Gösta Stoltz won), tied for 2nd with Rudolf Spielmann, behind Gideon Ståhlberg, at Stockholm 1939 ( Swedish Chess Championship), and won at Stockholm 1940. Chess Olympiad
The Chess Olympiad is a biennial chess tournament in which teams representing nations of the world compete. FIDE organises the tournament and selects the host nation. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, FIDE held an Online Chess Olympiad in 2020 and 2021, with a rapid time control that affected players' online ratings. The use of the name "Chess Olympiad" for FIDE's team championship is of historical origin and implies no connection with the Olympic Games. Birth of the Olympiad The first Olympiad was unofficial. For the 1924 Olympics an attempt was made to include chess in the Olympic Games but this failed because of problems with distinguishing between amateur and professional players. The 9th Chess Olympiad ( hr, 9. Šahovska olimpijada), organized by the Fédération Internationale des Échecs, FIDE and comprising an open team tournament, as well as several events designed to promote the game of chess, took place between August 20 and September 11, 1950, in Dubrovnik, FPR Yugoslavia (present day Croatia).
