All Kooked Out
''All Kooked Out!'' is the debut studio album by New Orleans–based drummer Stanton Moore. It was recorded entirely live in the studio with no overdubs and no headphones, in a week-long session that also yielded ''Mysteryfunk'', the debut album for Garage A Trois. Prior to this session, producer Dan Prothero worked with Moore on Galactic's first two albums. When Prothero asked Moore of who he'd like to play on his solo debut album he thought of eight-string guitarist Charlie Hunter and saxophonist Skerik who had both previously sat in with Galactic. Moore stated getting "Charlie Hunter and Skerik together would just be insane 'cause they're both just really fun guys to hang around with... quirky... funny and just great musicians." Regarding the album's title according to Moore, Prothero stated approvingly about Hunter, Skerik and Moore, "(you're) the biggest bunch a kookers I've ever met." Stanton Moore
Stanton Moore (born July 9, 1972) is an American funk, jazz, and rock drummer from New Orleans. Most widely known as a founding member of Galactic, Moore has also pursued a solo recording career (beginning with his 1998 debut '' All Kooked Out!'') and recorded with bands as diverse as jazz-funk keyboardist Robert Walter and heavy metal act Corrosion of Conformity. He also travels internationally to teach New Orleans drumming, writes regularly for drumming magazines, and releases instructional books and videos. In 2017 Moore established the Stanton Moore Drum Academy. Career Moore was raised in Metairie in suburban New Orleans. As of 2008 some of Moore's recent projects include the Stanton Moore Trio, Garage A Trois and the Midnite Disturbers. Ben Ellman
Ben Ellman is an American saxophonist, harmonica player, and producer most widely known as a member of the New Orleans–based funk band Galactic, with whom he has made eight studio albums. He joined the group in 1994, when they were known as Galactic Prophylactic. Ben also works as a DJ under the name Gypsyphonic Disko, where he mixes New Orleans style funk with klezmer, Eastern European and other exotic music. Saxophonics
Saxophonics is the creation of sounds (both musical and non-musical) through the use of a saxophone and one or more electronic effects units, often altering the acoustic sound of the horn beyond recognition. Additionally, saxophonics often entails the use of altissimo, overtones, growling, and other extended techniques. The electronic effects may include distortion, doublers, loops, wah-wah, and tone generators. Saxophonics is a recent term for techniques developed by saxophonists such as Eddie Harris and Sonny Stitt, who both began using the Varitone system to electrically amplify their saxophones during the late 1960s. In addition to playing the Varitone, Eddie Harris had experimented with looping techniques on his 1968 album ''Silver Cycles''. Brian Seeger
Brian Seeger is a guitarist, composer, producer, educator, recording engineer, bandleader and forensic musicologist. He was appointed Coca-Cola Endowed Chair in American Jazz Studies at the University of New Orleans in 2023. Musical career Seeger played his first professional gigs as a young teen in New Jersey. Before his senior year of high school, his family moved to Florida. Seeger attended Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. In the mid-80s, he traveled abroad for several years, performing as a street musician. Upon returning to the US in 1987, Seeger moved to Boston to complete a degree in Guitar Performance at the Berklee College of Music. Seeger moved to New Orleans in 1991 and began performing and touring with many New Orleans artists, including Davell Crawford, Aaron Neville and Stanton Moore. Sun Ra
Le Sony'r Ra (born Herman Poole Blount, May 22, 1914 – May 30, 1993), better known as Sun Ra, was an American jazz composer, bandleader, piano and synthesizer player, and poet known for his experimental music, "cosmic" philosophy, prolific output, and theatrical performances. For much of his career, Ra led The Arkestra, an ensemble with an ever-changing name and flexible line-up. Born and raised in Alabama, Blount became involved in the Music of Chicago, Chicago jazz scene during the late 1940s. He soon abandoned his birth name, taking the name Le Sony'r Ra, shortened to Sun Ra (after Ra, the Egyptian god of the Sun). Claiming to be an alien from Saturn on a mission to preach peace, he developed a mythical persona and an idiosyncratic credo that made him a pioneer of Afrofuturism. Sousaphone
The sousaphone ( ) is a brass musical instrument in the tuba family. Created around 1893 by J.W. Pepper & Son, J. W. Pepper at the direction of American bandleader John Philip Sousa (after whom the instrument was then named), it was designed to be easier to play than the concert tuba while standing or marching, as well as to carry the sound of the instrument above the heads of the band. Like the tuba, sound is produced by moving air past the lips, causing them to vibrate or "buzz" into a large cupped Mouthpiece (brass), mouthpiece. Unlike the tuba, the instrument is bent in a circle to fit around the body of the musician; it ends in a large, flaring bell that is pointed forward, projecting the sound ahead of the player.
