All Creatures Great And Small (franchise)
The ''All Creatures Great and Small'' franchise consists of a series of books, movies, and TV series based on books written by James Alfred Wight under the pen name James Herriot based on his experiences as a veterinary surgeon. The books have been adapted for film and television, including a 1975 film '' All Creatures Great and Small'', followed by the 1976 ''It Shouldn't Happen to a Vet'' sequel, as well as a long-running BBC television programme of the same title, and a prequel series in 2011, '' Young James Herriot''. By 2020, the series of books featuring James Herriot had sold some 60 million copies. In that year, the next television production was aired, '' All Creatures Great and Small''. James Herriot
James Alfred Wight (3 October 1916 – 23 February 1995), better known by his pen name James Herriot, was a British veterinary surgeon and author. Born in Sunderland, Wight graduated from Glasgow Veterinary College in 1939, returning to England to become a veterinary surgeon in Yorkshire, where he practised for almost 50 years. He is best known for writing a series of eight books set in the 1930s–1950s Yorkshire Dales about veterinary practice, animals, and their owners, which began with ''If Only They Could Talk'', first published in 1970. Over the decades, the series of books has sold some 60 million copies. The franchise based on his writings was very successful. Donald Sinclair (veterinary Surgeon)
Donald Vaughan Sinclair (22 April 1911 – 28 June 1995) was a British veterinary surgeon who graduated from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in 1933. He was made famous as the inspiration for the eccentric character Siegfried Farnon, in the semi-autobiographical books of James Herriot (Alf Wight), adapted for film and television as '' All Creatures Great and Small''. Royal Air Force service In 1939, Sinclair bought a veterinary practice at 23 Kirkgate, Thirsk, Yorkshire. In July 1940, Sinclair began war service in the Royal Air Force, and hired Alf Wight to run the practice. However, in order to join up, Sinclair had claimed to be younger than he actually was. Claude Whatham
Claude Whatham (7 December 1927 – 4 January 2008) was an English film and television director, mainly known for his work on dramas. Early life In 1940, Whatham, a teenage evacuee art student, had been commissioned to paint fairytale pictures by the young Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret at Windsor Castle. During the Second World War, the series of portraits by Sir Thomas Lawrence that usually line the walls of the Waterloo Chamber were removed from their frames for safe keeping and replaced by his fairytale pictures, painted on wallpapers rolls.
