Alison Limerick
Alison T. Limerick (born 1959, Stepney) is a British singer-songwriter who scored success in the 1990s with the club anthem " Where Love Lives", which was her solo debut and a No. 3 hit on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play in 1991. Biography Limerick attended the London School of Contemporary Dance and switched to a music career, first as a backing vocalist, in the 1980s. She sang on Grand Union Orchestra's 1986 world jazz album ''The Song of Many Tongues'', written by Tony Haynes. In 1989, she made a brief appearance as an African sorceress in Bob Rafelson's film, '' Mountains of the Moon''. She has also contributed to This Mortal Coil, singing on two of its albums: '' Filigree & Shadow'' (1986) and ''Blood'' (1991). Stepney
Stepney is an area in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in the East End of London. Stepney is no longer officially defined, and is usually used to refer to a relatively small area. However, for much of its history the place name was applied to a much larger manor and parish, which covered most of the inner East End. Stepney Green is a remnant of a larger area of Common Land formerly known as Mile End Green. The area was built up rapidly during the 19th century, mainly to accommodate immigrant workers and poor families displaced from London. ''Holy Smoke'' is the fourth solo studio album by English musician Peter Murphy. It was released on 14 April 1992 through Beggars Banquet Records. Produced by Mike Thorne, the album features contributions from Alison Limerick, Jonathan Carney, Audrey Riley and The Hundred Men, his backing band since 1988's '' Love Hysteria'' album. Although the album didn't meet with the commercial success of its predecessor, ''Deep'' (1990), it peaked at number 108 on ''Billboard'' 200 chart. The lead single off the album, " The Sweetest Drop", peaked at number 2 on Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. Critical reception Ned Raggett of AllMusic was mixed in his assessment of the album. Peter John Joseph Murphy (born 11 July 1957) is an English musician, singer, and songwriter. He is the vocalist for the post-punk band Bauhaus (band), Bauhaus, which he co-founded with Daniel Ash in 1978. After Bauhaus disbanded, Murphy formed Dalis Car with Japan (band), Japan's bassist Mick Karn and released one album, ''The Waking Hour'' (1984). He went on to release a number of solo albums, including ''Should the World Fail to Fall Apart'' (1986) and ''Love Hysteria'' (1988). ''Sleeps with the Fishes'' is the lone collaborative album from Clan of Xymox founding member Pieter Nooten and Canadian guitarist/ producer Michael Brook, released by 4AD on 12 October 1987. Michael Brook (born 1951) is a Canadian guitarist, inventor, music producer, and film music composer. He plays in many genres, including rock, electronica, world music, minimalism and film scores. His collaborations with musicians around the world have made him "one of the most sought-after producers in the music industry." Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Brook lives in Los Angeles. Pieter Nooten
Pieter Nooten (born 22 January 1961 in Oss) is a Dutch musician and composer best known for his work with Clan of Xymox. Music career Nooten's musical career began in the late 1970s. Starting out as the drummer in a local symphonic rock band, he quickly changed to bass guitar and later keyboards, playing in different bands. At the height of house squatting culture and new wave, Nooten met Anka Wolbert and Ronny Moorings who had just formed Clan of Xymox together. During the mid-eighties Clan of Xymox recorded two highly acclaimed albums on 4AD. In 1987, he teamed up with Michael Brook to record '' Sleeps with the Fishes'', released also on 4AD. ''Blood'' is the third and final album released by 4AD collective This Mortal Coil, an umbrella title for a loose grouping of guest musicians and vocalists brought together by label co-founder Ivo Watts-Russell. The supergroup consists primarily of artists attached to the 4AD label, of which Watts-Russell was boss and president at the time. The double album was released in April 1991, and was the second release on 4AD to utilize the double album-identifier "DAD" prefix in its catalog number. ''Blood'' was the final LP in the project's history, although Watts-Russell collaborated again with two TMC performers on his next project, The Hope Blister, in 1998. ''Filigree & Shadow'' is the second album released by 4AD collective This Mortal Coil, an umbrella title for a loose grouping of guest musicians and vocalists brought together by label boss Ivo Watts-Russell. The supergroup consists primarily of artists attached to the 4AD label, of which Watts-Russell was the co-founder and (at the time) the owner and director. The album was released in September 1986, and entered the UK Independent Music chart on 11 October 1986 and peaked at #2, spending 16 weeks on the chart in total. Of the 25 tracks, 13 are instrumental, including the title track. This was the first double-LP released on 4AD, and introduced the "DAD" (for double album) prefix into the label's catalogue. ''Mountains of the Moon'' is a 1990 American biographical film depicting the 1857–1858 journey of Richard Francis Burton and John Hanning Speke in their expedition to Central Africa, which culminated in Speke's discovery of the source of the Nile River and led to a bitter rivalry between the two men. The film stars Patrick Bergin as Burton and Iain Glen as Speke. Delroy Lindo appears as an African whom the explorers meet. The film was directed by Bob Rafelson based on the 1982 novel '' Burton and Speke'' by William Harrison. Cast Music The original music was composed by Michael Small, who incorporated genuine traditional African music into a traditional orchestral palette. Tony Haynes (English Composer)
Tony Haynes (10 July 1941 – 17 September 2024) was an English composer and bandleader best known for his work with Grand Union Orchestra since 1982. He played piano and trombone. Early life Tony Haynes's musical career began in 1954, as a 13-year-old piano and trombone player in dance bands earning £2–3 per show. He also had stints as a church organist and brass band trombonist, but playing jazz was a more formative experience. As a teenager in the 1950s, Haynes listened to early and modern jazz alongside a lot of European classical music. After studying music at the University of Oxford, Haynes took a postgraduate degree in contemporary music at the University of Nottingham, working simultaneously as musical director at the Nottingham Playhouse and composing music for the resident repertory company's productions.
