Alipes (horse)
Alipes (1757) was an undefeated British Thoroughbred racehorse who won all eight of her races, including the 1761 Great Subscription Purse. She was owned by Sir B. Graham and later Richard Grosvenor. Background Alipes was a brown or bay filly bred by William Swinburn and foaled in 1757. She was sired by the unbeaten Regulus, who was British Champion sire eight times. Her dam was Lusty, a daughter of Locust. Racing career Alipes first race was at the age of four in March 1761 at Newmarket Racecourse, where she won a sweepstakes of 300 guineas. The following month she beat Sir J. Moore's Dupe, John Howe's Dormouse filly, Sir Charles Sedley's Aelous and eight others to win the Jockey Club Plate. In June, she won the Subscription Purse at Newcastle by beating Mark and Trudge. Regulus (1739) was an undefeated British Thoroughbred racehorse who won eight Royal Plates in 1745. Background He was bred in England by Lord Chedworth. Sir Charles Sedley, 2nd Baronet
Sir Charles Sedley, 2nd Baronet (c. 1721 – 23 August 1778), was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1747 and 1778. Sedley was the eldest son of Sir Charles Sedley, 1st Baronet, son of Sir Charles Sedley, illegitimate son of Sir Charles Sedley, 5th Baronet and was educated at Westminster School and University College, Oxford, where he matriculated in 1739. Alcock's Arabian
Alcock's Arabian (foaled about 1700, died about 1733), also known as Pelham Grey Arabian and less certainly as Bloody Buttocks and Ancaster Turk, among other names, is the ancestor of all grey-coloured Thoroughbred horses,Lady Wentworth, ''The Swift Runner: racing speed through the ages'' (G. Snake (horse)
Snakes are elongated, limbless, carnivorous reptiles of the suborder Serpentes (). Like all other squamates, snakes are ectothermic, amniote vertebrates covered in overlapping scales. Many species of snakes have skulls with several more joints than their lizard ancestors, enabling them to swallow prey much larger than their heads ( cranial kinesis). To accommodate their narrow bodies, snakes' paired organs (such as kidneys) appear one in front of the other instead of side by side, and most have only one functional lung. Crab (horse)
Crab also known as Old Crab and Mr. Panton's Crab (1722 – December 1750) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse. After retiring from racing he became a successful stallion and was British Champion sire in 1748, 1749 and 1750. He was owned by the 1st Earl of Portmore until purchased by Mr. Cotton and then Thomas Panton. Background Crab was a grey colt bred by Charles Pelham and was foaled in 1722. He was a son of Alcock's Arabian out of a daughter of Basto. He was sold to David Colyear, 1st Earl of Portmore when he was young. Although grey was a fairly common color in the foundation stock of the Thoroughbred, it became increasingly rare over time. Bald Galloway (foaled ''c.''1705) was a leading Thoroughbred sire in the 18th century. He was foaled in about 1705 and was bred by Captain Rider. He was sired by St. Victor's Barb and his dam was Grey Whynot, a daughter of Whynot. Grey Whynot's dam was a Royal mare. Bald Galloway was leading Leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland in 1725. His best racing son was Buckhunter, who won Queen Anne's Gold Cup at York in 1719 and several King's Plates. He was also a successful stallion, siring Craven Stakes winner Firetail. However he was more well known for producing broodmares, siring the dams of seven Classic winners including Derby winner Noble, along with the dam of champion sire Trumpator. He later became a successful stallion, with his progeny including Epsom Derby winner Assassin. Background Sweetbriar was a chestnut colt bred by Thomas Meredith and foaled in 1769. Goldfinder (1764–1789) was an undefeated Thoroughbred racehorse. His wins included two Newmarket Challenge Cup and Whips. After retiring from racing he became a successful sire. Background Goldfinder was a bay colt foaled in 1764. He was bred by John St Leger Douglas and was sired by the undefeated racehorse and Champion sire Snap. His dam was a daughter of Blank, another Champion sire. A stud animal is a registered animal retained for breeding. The terms for the male of a given animal species (stallion, bull, rooster, etc.) usually imply that the animal is intact—that is, not castrated—and therefore capable of siring offspring. A specialized vocabulary exists for de-sexed animals (gelding, steer, etc.) and those animals used in grading up to a purebred status.
