Alinda Fallax
Alinda ( grc, Ἄλινδα) was an inland city and bishopric in ancient Caria, in Asia Minor (Anatolia). Modern scholars identify Alinda with the Hellenistic foundation of Alexandria ad Latmum (Ἀλεξάνδρεια πρὸς τῷ Λάτμῳ) noted by Stephanus of Byzantium. Location and remains It is situated near Demircideresi, on a hilltop which commands the modern-day town of Karpuzlu, Aydın Province, in western Turkey, and overlooks a fertile plain. The non-restored but very well preserved ruins are much visited, especially within the circuit of organized tours (''locally called "safaris"'') with departure from either the international tourism center of Bodrum or from Milas and reaching Karpuzlu through a mountain road from the south. In 2018, four kilometers of the ancient stone road, which connects the ancient cities of Alinda and Latmus, were destroyed by villagers to make way for their olive groves. ''Alinda viridana'' is a species of air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Clausiliidae, the door snails. Description The length of the shell attains 20 mm, its diameter 4⅓ mm. (Original description in Latin of ''Clausilia montana'') The shell is fusiform-cylindrical with an arched slit. It is solid, tightly folded, and slightly glossy, with a horn-yellow coloration. The spire is cylindrical, gradually tapering to a blunt apex, and the suture is impressed with a slight margin. The shell consists of 13 whorls, with the first 9 to 10 being convex and the subsequent ones somewhat flattened. The body whorl is rough at the front, featuring a very short crest at the base. The aperture is oblong-pyriform, with a moderately sized upper lamella and a deep, slightly branched lower lamella. Description The length of the shell attains 14 mm, its diameter 3.5 mm. (Original description in Latin) The shell shows an arched slit, it is club-shaped and spindle-like. It is solid, tightly folded, translucent, and glossy with a horn-yellow hue. The spire tapers abruptly above, with a somewhat blunt tip. It comprises 11 convex whorls. The body whorl is swollen behind the aperture, rough in texture, and features a short crest at the base. The aperture is oval-pyriform, distinctly canaliculated at the base, with a thick palatal callus that narrows linearly. The upper lamella is relatively large, while the lower one is deep and subvertical, marked by a distinct crescent-shaped fold.
