Algemeyne Entsiklopedye
The ''Algemeyne Entsiklopedye'' () is a Yiddish-language encyclopedia published in twelve volumes from 1934 to 1966. It is divided into two subseries: five volumes of the series, covering general knowledge, and six volumes of the ' series (initially planned as a single supplementary volume) covering Jewish history and Jewish culture, culture through a series of essays. Additionally, a small sample volume was released in 1932. The encyclopedia's early volumes emphasize leftist history and politics, although the project shifted in tone in response to Nazi Germany, Nazi persecution, and became increasingly focused on covering Jewish topics. After the destruction of Jewish communities throughout Europe – the encyclopedia's main audience – in the Holocaust, it transformed from a general-purpose resource into an effort to commemorate what was lost. Raphael Abramovitch
Raphael Abramovitch Rein (Рафаил Абрамович Рейн; 21 July 1880 – 11 April 1963), best known as Raphael Abramovitch, was a Russian socialist, a member of the General Jewish Labour Union, General Jewish Workers' Union in Lithuania, Poland and Russia (Bund), and a leader of the Menshevik wing of the Russian Social-Democratic Workers' Party (RSDRP). Abramovitch emigrated from Soviet Russia in 1920, landing in Berlin, where he was a co-founder of the long-running Menshevik journal ''The Socialist Courier'' . After 1940, with the rise of fascism in Europe, he made his way to the United States, where he lived his final years. Biography Early years Raphael Abramovitch Rein was born in Daugavpils (Dvinsk) on 7 July 1880. As a student at Riga Polytechnic he became involved in revolutionary politics and became a convinced Marxist.
