Alfred C. Markley
Alfred Collins Markley (1843–1926) was an American brigadier general who served in the American Civil War and the Spanish–American War. He was known for commanding the 24th Infantry Regiment during the Battle of San Juan Hill and the Siege of Santiago. American Civil War Markley was born on April 18, 1843, at Doylestown, Pennsylvania as the son of John Sorver Markley and Eliza Collins. His family then moved to Philadelphia and Markley spent a majority of his childhood there, attending private and public schools within the city. Markley enlisted in the Union Army on 1861 and was initially assigned to the 25th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment before being made a corporal of the 52nd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment from July 9, 1862, until September 1, 1863. He was then made a sergeant of Company K of the 197th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment from July 11 to September 5, 1864. Doylestown is a borough and the county seat of Bucks County in Pennsylvania, United States. 127th United States Colored Infantry Regiment
The 127th United States Colored Infantry was an American infantry regiment which fought with the Union Army during the American Civil War. Staffed by African American enlisted men who were placed under the command of white officers, the regiment was formed and trained at Camp William Penn near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania between August 23 and September 10, 1864. Following training, the regiment joined the 10th Corps, within the Army of the James, and later took part in some of the final battles of the war including the Battle of Chaffin's Farm, the Battle of Fair Oaks and Darbytown Road and the fighting around the Appomattox Court House. After the war, the regiment undertook occupation duties as part of the 25th Corps in Texas along the Mexican frontier and the Rio Grande River before its personnel were mustered out in September and October 1865. The 23rd Infantry Regiment is an infantry regiment in the United States Army. A unit with the same name was formed on 26 June 1812 and saw action in 14 battles during the War of 1812. Fort D
Fort D is a Civil War-era fort alongside the Mississippi River in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, USA. Construction Work on Fort D began on August 6, 1861, under the direction of Lieutenant John W. Powell of Illinois. Later, Powell recruited a company of men from Cape Girardeau to serve in the Union army. Since Powell was from Illinois, these men were designated as Battery F, 2nd Illinois Light Artillery. After training for several months, the battery was sent up the Tennessee River to Pittsburgh Landing, near a small chapel known as Shiloh. During the Battle of Shiloh, on April 6, 1862, Powell gave a command to fire by raising his hand. A bullet shattered his wrist, and the arm was later amputated to stop infection. In 1869, one-armed John Wesley Powell led the first successful navigation of the Colorado River through what Powell named "the Grand Canyon". Siboney is a Cuban village and ''consejo popular'' (i.e.: people's council) located in the east of the city of Santiago de Cuba and belonging to its municipality. Fort Reno (Oklahoma)
Fort Reno is a former United States Army cavalry post west of El Reno, Oklahoma. It is named for General Jesse L. Reno, who died at the Battle of South Mountain in the American Civil War. History Fort Reno began as a temporary camp in July 1874 near the Darlington Agency, which needed protection from an Indian uprising that eventually led to the Red River War. After the conflict ended, the post remained to control and protect the Southern Cheyenne and Southern Arapaho reservation, and Fort Reno was established as a permanent fort on July 15, 1874. Soldiers from Fort Reno also attempted to control Boomer and Sooner activity during the rush to open the Unassigned Lands for settlement. Among the units stationed here were the famed Ninth Cavalry of Buffalo Soldiers.
