Alfred Goldsworthy Bailey, (March 18, 1905 – April 21, 1997) was a Canadian educator, poet, anthropologist, ethno-historian, and academic administrator. Life Born in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, the son of Professor Loring Woart Bailey Jr. and Ernestine Valiant (Gale) Bailey, he received his BA degree in 1927 from the University of New Brunswick (UNB). He was editor of ''The High School of Quebec Magazine'' while in high school, and verse editor of ''The Brunswickian'' at UNB, and contributed poetry to both magazines. Bailey then attended the University of Toronto, where he earned his MA in 1929. There he became friends with Earle Birney, Roy Daniells, and Robert Finch, and was introduced to the poetry of T.S. Eliot. After graduating, Bailey worked as a reporter for the '' Toronto Mail and Empire''. He returned to the University of Toronto to receive his Ph.D in 1934. Alfred Bailey (English Cricketer)
Alfred Edward Bailey (14 March 1871 – 1 August 1950) was a professional cricketer who played first-class cricket for Somerset County Cricket Club from 1900 to 1911 as slow left-arm spin bowler. Cricket career Bailey played for Surrey in second eleven matches in the early to mid-1890s, but made no first-class appearances for the side. In 1900, he played in two matches in the north of England for Somerset in the space of a week; he took only one wicket in these games, both of which were lost heavily. He reappeared in the Somerset side halfway through the 1905 season and then for the next two years was a fairly regular member of what was a very weak side. In his second match of the season, against Hampshire he took seven first innings wickets for 113 runs in a high-scoring game. Alfred W. Bailey (1828 or 1829 – 22 September 1886) was an early British trade unionist. Living in Preston, Bailey came to prominence in the 1860s as an advocate of the establishment of a national trade union federation. He attended the United Kingdom Alliance of Organised Trades conference in 1867, representing the Preston and Blackburn branches of the newly founded Amalgamated Society of Journeymen Tailors (ASJT). He was elected as vice-president of the ASJT and, later in 1867, was arrested along with the other leaders of the union, on a charge of conspiracy to impoverish business owners during a strike."The tailors' strike", ''Glasgow Herald'', 23 August 1867 Bailey was found guilty, and bound over to keep the peace. Alfred Marshall Bailey (February 18, 1894 – February 25, 1978) was an American ornithologist who was associated with the Denver Museum of Natural History (now the Denver Museum of Nature and Science) in Colorado for most of his working life. Early years Bailey was born in Iowa City, Iowa, where he went to school and then attended the University of Iowa. While a student there he participated in a three-month scientific expedition to Laysan, one of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Career After graduation in 1916, Bailey served as curator of birds and mammals at the Louisiana State Museum in New Orleans (1916–1919). Alfred James Bailey (1868 – 1948), was a British Trade Unionist and Liberal Party politician, serving as Lord Mayor of Sheffield. Early life and trade unionism Bailey was born in Scredington in Lincolnshire in 1868.
