Alfonso Thiele
Alfonso Thiele (5 April 1920 – 15 July 1986) was an Italian and American racing driver. He participated in one Formula One World Championship Grand Prix, on 4 September 1960. He scored no championship points. Most of his career was spent in sports car racing. World War II During World War II Thiele was a captain of the Office of Strategic Services of Italian anti-fascist partisans. Driving career Working as a test driver for Abarth he participated in many events and races. In 1955 he was a member of the team that completed 3,743.642 km at an average speed of 155.985 km/h at the Monza track. One week later, with journalists present and participating, the team set the 500 km, 500-mile, 1,000 km, 48-hour and 72-hour records. Walkiria Terradura
Walkiria Terradura (9 January 1924 – 5 July 2023) was an Italian anti-fascist partisan during the Second World War. She was awarded the Silver Medal of Military Valour. Biography Terradura was born on 9 January 1924 in Gubbio, Perugia. As one of five children of committed antifascist lawyer Gustavo Terradura and his wife Laura, she witnessed her father's harassment and imprisonment several times during her youth. Her contemptuous attitude towards the fascist regime in Italy at the time earned her repeated admonishments at school and interrogations at the police headquarters. Following school, Terradura studied law at the University of Perugia. In January 1944, when agents of the OVRA raided her home looking to arrest her father, she hid him and they subsequently fled to the Monti del Burano to join partisan formations in that area. Coventry Climax was a British manufacturer of forklift trucks, fire pumps, racing engines, and other speciality engines. History Pre WWI The company was started in 1903 as Lee Stroyer, a joint venture by Jens Stroyer and Pelham Lee. In 1905, following the departure of Stroyer, it was relocated to Paynes Lane, Coventry, and renamed as Coventry Simplex by Horace Pelham Lee, a former Daimler employee, who saw an opportunity in the nascent internal combustion engine market. An early user was GWK, who produced over 1,000 light cars with Coventry-Simplex two-cylinder engines between 1911 and 1915. Just before the First World War, a Coventry-Simplex engine was used by Lionel Martin to power the first Aston Martin car. Cooper T45
The Cooper T45 was an Open-wheel car, open-wheel formula racing car, developed and built by the Cooper Car Company in 1958, and designed by Owen Maddock. It competed in Formula 2 racing as well as in Formula One racing, where it won one World Championship Grand Prix, the 1958 Monaco Grand Prix, being driven by Maurice Trintignant. Development history and technology The Cooper T45 was the successor to the Cooper T43. The chassis remained almost unchanged, but the wheel suspension was revised. The engine was lowered. Until 1959 the cars had drum brakes, which were then replaced by disc brakes. Racing history For the Formula 1 version, Climax developed a 2.2-litre engine. The 1960 French Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held at Reims-Gueux on 3 July 1960. The 1960 Belgian Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held at Spa-Francorchamps on 19 June 1960. It was race 5 of 10 in the 1960 World Championship of Drivers and race 4 of 9 in the 1960 International Cup for Formula One Manufacturers. Stirling Moss and Mike Taylor were seriously injured in crashes during practice, and Chris Bristow and Alan Stacey were killed in accidents during the race.
