Aleksey Popov (director)
Aleksey Dmitrievich Popov (Алексей Дмитриевич Попов; 1891-1961) was a leading Soviet theatre director who managed the Soviet Army Theatre between 1935 and 1960. He was awarded three Stalin Prizes and was named a People's Artist of the USSR in 1946. His son Andrei was also a notable actor. Popov made his directorial debut in 1923 at Vakhtangov's studio and gained wide recognition as the chief director of the Revolution Theatre in 1931-35. After moving to the Red Army Theatre in 1935, Popov "perfected the bombastic style of the battle drama on the enormous firing range of a stage". Alexey Lvovich Popov (; July 13, 1974 in Moscow) is a Russian journalist and TV commentator best known as a commentator on Formula 1 racing. Biography The first Formula 1 race Popov witnessed was in 1988 in Belgium: his grandfather worked there in the Trade Mission of the USSR. He started his journalist career in 1991 in the age of 17 for the newspaper ''Sport Express''. As he later confessed, he was dissatisfied with quality of Formula 1 coverage in the Soviet media, and he decided to contact Sport Express editors if he could offer any help. To his surprise, he was appointed as an editor himself. Later he wrote several books and many articles, including those for magazines ''Formula +'', ''Autosport'', ''Grand Prix'', ''F1Life'', the newspaper '' Soviet Sport''. He began race commentary in 1992 on the TV channel Russia 1, then-RTR.
